As environmental issues such as climate change and resource depletion intensify globally, green consumption behavior has emerged as a critical topic for sustainable development. Simultaneously, the influence of social media influencers (SMIs) on consumer behavior has expanded significantly with the growth of digital platforms. In particular, eco-influencers who practice and promote eco-friendly lifestyles through social media have gained attention as key agents in facilitating consumers' green consumption. However, empirical research examining the mechanisms through which eco-influencers affect green consumption behavior remains limited.
This study aims to empirically investigate the effects of marketing sources and non-marketing sources on green consumption behavior through eco-influencer characteristics (SMI credibility and SMI inspiration) and expected brand value. Furthermore, it examines the dual role of digital literacy as both a direct predictor and a moderator in the relationship between expected brand value and green consumption behavior. The research model was developed based on Source Credibility Theory, Customer Inspiration Theory, Trust Transfer Theory, and Social Learning Theory. A survey was conducted with Korean adults who had experience purchasing eco-friendly products, and data from 400 valid responses were analyzed using Smart PLS 4.0.
The analysis revealed that both marketing sources and non-marketing sources had positive effects on SMI credibility and SMI inspiration. This indicates that consumers who obtain eco-friendly product information through corporate official channels as well as word-of-mouth from friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues develop higher perceptions of eco-influencer credibility and inspiration. SMI credibility and SMI inspiration both demonstrated significant positive effects on expected brand value, confirming that trust in eco-influencers and inspiration derived from them substantially contribute to consumers' value perceptions of recommended brands.
Notably, SMI credibility and SMI inspiration did not have direct effects on green consumption behavior, while expected brand value had a significant positive effect on green consumption behavior. Additional mediation analysis confirmed that expected brand value fully mediates the relationships between SMI characteristics and green consumption behavior, indicating that eco-influencer characteristics influence green consumption behavior indirectly through expected brand value formation rather than directly. Digital literacy was found to have a significant positive direct effect on green consumption behavior and also to moderate the relationship between expected brand value and green consumption behavior, demonstrating that consumers with higher digital literacy are more likely to engage in green consumption and that the effect of expected brand value on such behavior is strengthened for these consumers.
The theoretical implications of this study include establishing a new research framework by integrating marketing sources and non-marketing sources as antecedents of SMI characteristics, extending the application of Trust Transfer Theory through the discovery that expected brand value serves as a complete mediator, and contributing to bridging digital literacy research with sustainable consumption research through the identification of digital literacy's dual role. The practical implications suggest that eco-influencer marketing strategies should focus on building expected brand value, implement omni-channel strategies utilizing both marketing and non-marketing sources, and develop differentiated marketing approaches for consumer segments with higher digital literacy.
