The purpose of this study is to empirically examine the structural pathways through which mindfulness influences the quality of life of socially vulnerable older adults, with positive psychological capital serving as a mediating mechanism. As Korean society has entered a super-aged phase, increasing attention has been directed toward the mental health and subjective well-being of older adults. However, existing studies have largely focused on material and physical determinants, thereby failing to sufficiently explain the interactions among psychological resources such as mindfulness and positive psychological capital.
To address this limitation, the present study proposes an integrated psychological model linking mindfulness, positive psychological capital, and quality of life, and tests the proposed model using structural equation modeling (SEM) (Kline, 2016). Socially vulnerable older adults were operationally defined as individuals aged 65 years or older who were recipients of the Customized Elderly Care Services. This definition is grounded in service eligibility criteria based on objective indicators such as economic vulnerability, functional decline, and social isolation. For the empirical analysis, survey data were collected from 566 older adults residing in Daejeon Metropolitan City who were utilizing these services.
The measurement instruments consisted of validated scales assessing mindfulness (attention, decentering, non-judgmental acceptance, and present awareness), positive psychological capital (self-efficacy, hope, optimism, and resilience), and quality of life (pleasure, self-actualization, autonomy, and environmental control). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and structural equation modeling.
The findings of the analysis revealed that mindfulness had a significant positive effect on positive psychological capital. Positive psychological capital, in turn, exerted a significant positive influence on the quality of life of socially vulnerable older adults. Mindfulness did not demonstrate a significant direct effect on quality of life; however, it showed a significant indirect effect through the mediation of positive psychological capital. These findings suggest that mindfulness contributes to the enhancement of quality of life not through direct effects, but by facilitating the development of internal psychological resources.
This study contributes to the literature by empirically clarifying the structural relationship between mindfulness and positive psychological capital among socially vulnerable older adults. The findings provide empirical evidence to support the development of psychological resource–based welfare intervention programs. Moreover, the findings highlight the necessity of moving beyond traditional elderly welfare paradigms centered on material and physical support, and toward an approach that emphasizes the cultivation of psychological resources. Finally, this study discusses its limitations and proposes directions for future research, including longitudinal studies and intervention-based experimental designs that reflect the characteristics of older adult populations.
