Purpose :
This study statistically analyzes the demographic and clinical characteristics(year, gender, age, insurance type) of outpatients and inpatients who visited the Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion at Daejeon Korean Medicine Hospital between March 1, 2020, and February 28, 2025. This study was conducted to statistically analyze trends in the use of traditional Korean medicine and to identify changes in the medical utilization patterns of outpatients and inpatients resulting from COVID-19 pandemic outbreaks and institutional changes.
Methods :
A retrospective observational study was conducted using medical records of 14,882 patients, comprising 119,010 outpatient visits and 3,686 inpatient admissions, who visited the Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion during the study period. Changes in trends regarding patient gender, age, insurance type and overall visit patterns were identified. Cross-tabulation analysis using the chi-square test was performed to examine annual differences in patient distributions. Linear regression analysis was conducted to evaluate annual trends in patient numbers. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.
Results :
1. Analysis of patient volume trends revealed an overall gradual decline. Outpatients, including new patients, showed a statistically significant decreasing trend, whereas the decrease in inpatients was not statistically significant.
2. Analysis of annual patient numbers by gender showed a decrease in both male and female patients, consistent with the overall downward trend. Female patients constituted a higher proportion in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
3. Analysis of patient numbers by age group over the years confirmed a trend toward an aging patient population. Over the five-year period, the proportion of patients aged 30 and under decreased sharply for both outpatients and inpatients, while the proportion of patients aged 70 and over increased the most significantly.
4. Analysis of annual patient numbers by insurance type showed a statistically significant decrease in outpatient patients for both insurance categories. For inpatient patients, the National Health Insurance showed a statistically significant decrease, while the Automobile Insurance showed a decreasing trend without significant variation by year.
Conclusion :
The results of this study revealed a general decline in patient numbers following the COVID-19 pandemic alongside changes in patients' demographic characteristics. This suggests that social and institutional factors can influence patterns of Korean medicine utilization. These findings can serve as foundational data for establishing efficient treatment strategies in the future. However, due to the limitation of being a retrospective analysis of data from a single institution, future multi-center studies and in-depth research considering disease and treatment factors are necessary.
