Early childhood education has traditionally upheld the principle of respecting each child's unique temperament and developmental pace, providing quiet and delicate support and guidance based on this understanding to individual young children. Due to this educational stance, the term 'slow learner' has not been widely used in early childhood traditionally, as developmental pace differences were strongly understood and embraced within the natural category of individuality. Consequently, directly applying the concept of 'slow learner' to young children has been practically challenging, and related research has been scarce, making it difficult to find appropriate support strategies for slow learners in early childhood education settings.
Furthermore, children's play is regarded not merely as a leisure activity but as learning itself, through which children intrinsically learn and grow, serving as a core activity for holistic development where cognitive, social, and emotional aspects are integrated. Through play, young children express their thoughts and feelings, interact with peers to form relationships, and enhance problem-solving abilities, achieving significant growth across various developmental domains. Therefore, a deep understanding of slow learners' play characteristics and the development of effective play support strategies based on this understanding are essential for promoting their holistic development. In this context, this study, building upon traditional early childhood education values and play development theories, aims to reinterpret the existing 'slow learner' concept to suit the early childhood context and to deeply explore early childhood teachers' experiences regarding slow learners' play characteristics and play support. This study is expected to contribute to respecting developmental differences in early childhood while also seeking tailored play support strategies applicable to slow learner children.
This study applied a qualitative research methodology, selecting 15 in-service early childhood teachers from early childhood education institutions as research participants. Focus Group Interviews (FGIs) were conducted with these teachers, divided into three teams, for a total of three sessions. The interview content underwent meticulous transcription. The collected data were analyzed using the qualitative analysis program NVivo and the constant comparative method, through which core and sub-categories of experiences related to early childhood slow learners were derived.
The major findings of this study are as follows. Through qualitative data analysis, three main higher-level categories and their constituent sub-categories were derived. First, regarding the play characteristics of early childhood slow learners, early childhood teachers perceived that these children experienced difficulties in social interaction with peers during play. Specifically, they showed difficulties in recognizing complex social cues and forming relationships with peers, which manifested as being excluded or experiencing stigmatization from peers. Furthermore, in language and communication styles, limitations in situation-appropriate verbal expression and difficulties in initiating and maintaining conversations with peers were prominent. Moreover, limitations in cognitive abilities and problem-solving skills necessary for play participation, such as deficits in understanding complex instructions and memory, as well as a lack of play extensibility and flexibility, were identified. These characteristics led to imbalances in play flow or the persistence of self-centered play patterns, restricting slow learners' play opportunities and degrading the quality of their play.
Second, in the early childhood teachers' play support experiences for slow learners, various individualized support strategies from teachers were observed. Early childhood teachers recognized the importance of identifying slow learners' characteristics and diagnosis, emphasized the significance of early intervention, and applied individualized play support strategies. Specifically, based on Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) theory, teachers provided 'scaffolding' support through the use of visual materials, gradual prompting, and positive reinforcement to encourage children's play participation. Teachers particularly emphasized the importance of psychological support, such as focusing on the process rather than the outcome of play and providing positive feedback even for small successes, in an effort to enhance slow learners' play efficacy. These dedicated efforts and psychological support from teachers played a crucial role in leading to positive changes in slow learners.
Third, in terms of challenges and demands in the play support process, realistic constraints that made it difficult for early childhood teachers to sustain individualized support were revealed. Teachers expressed that due to limitations in time and personnel, it was challenging to provide sufficient individualized support to slow learners. Additionally, parents' lack of understanding of developmental delays and uncooperative attitudes with institutions were pointed out as major factors hindering continuous home-institution linkage. These parental rearing attitudes and difficulties in home play support limited slow learners' play interaction methods and undermined the effectiveness of support in institutions. Furthermore, alongside the need for institutional support and professional development, a strong need for clear legal and policy definitions of slow learners was raised. Teachers strongly demanded the development of national early screening tools, a shift to practical, field-centered training programs, and the establishment of an interconnected system with regional experts and related organizations.
The discussion of this study's results confirmed that the play characteristics of early childhood slow learners showed features directly consistent with existing concepts of slow learners, which include cognitive, social, and linguistic difficulties. In particular, how difficulties in social interaction and language/communication acted as specific constraints in play situations was empirically demonstrated through this study. While individualized play support strategies by early childhood teachers, based on Vygotsky's ZPD concept, were identified as effective approaches for promoting children's potential development, the practical challenges and policy deficiencies in the field that impede such efforts were also clearly revealed. These difficulties showed substantial similarities with issues faced by teachers guiding slow learners at the primary school level, leading to the conclusion that establishing a continuous support system from the early childhood stage is urgent.
In conclusion, it was confirmed that systematic and tailored play support for early childhood slow learners is essential for their holistic development and social integration. To achieve this, first, it is crucial to make parental education programs mandatory, which help parents increase their acceptance of slow learners' developmental characteristics and establish consistent support systems between institutions and homes. Second, the development of national standardized early screening and diagnostic tools and the clarification of legal and policy definitions for early childhood slow learners must precede. Third, professional development programs should be shifted to field-centered training in the form of consulting and mentoring, and a system for linking with regional experts and relevant institutions should be institutionalized to strengthen teachers' capabilities and ensure comprehensive support. This study is expected to provide important foundational data for the development of future slow learner support programs and practical implementation in early childhood education settings
