This study investigates the Seon & Pure Land Double Practice (禪淨雙修) in the thought of Yanming Yanshou(永明延壽, 904~975), focu sing on his seminal work 『WanShanTongGuiJi(萬善同歸集)』. Although Se on meditation and Pure Land devotion have historically developed as dis tinct paths based on different soteriological orientations—self-power and other-power respectively—Yanshou systematized an integrated framewor k in which both practices are understood as complementary methods th at ultimately return to the principle of One Mind.
Through a close textual analysis of the 『WanShanTongGuiJi』, this stu dy aims to clarify the doctrinal foundation and practical structure of Yanshou’s theory of double practice, and to examine its transmission and influence in later Chinese and Goryeo Korean Buddhism. First, the stud y reviews Yanshou’s life, lineage, and the socio-religious background of the late Tang and Five Dynasties period in order to illuminate the hi storical context in which his thought was formed. It then analyzes the composition and core concepts of the 『WanShanTongGuiJi』, especially t he doctrine that “all virtuous practices return to One Mind,” which a sserts that all skillful means and virtuous actions ultimately converge in ultimate reality.
Yanshou criticizes both exclusive reliance on Seon meditation and the rejection of concrete practices, and instead advocates the harmonious i ntegration of meditative realization and meritorious action. By interpreti ng Seon meditation as the cultivation of mind and Pure Land practice a s the cultivation of practice, he presents a balanced soteriological syste m in which realization and practice mutually reinforce each other. His Pure Land thought—articulated through the perspectives of Mind-Only P ure Land and Original-Vow Pure Land—is thus stablished not merely as devotional faith but as a comprehensive doctrinal system grounded in S eon and Mahāyāna scholastic traditions.
Furthermore, this study demonstrates that Yanshou’s theory of Seon & Pure Land Double Practice significantly influenced later Song-dynasty Chinese Buddhism and Goryeo Korean Buddhism, providing a doctrinal f oundation for the development of integrated Seon–Pure Land traditions.
In conclusion, Yanshou’s integrative soteriology represents a pivotal transformation in East Asian Buddhism by overcoming sectarian divisions and presenting a One-Mind-centered system of practice. This study con tributes to a systematic understanding of the doctrinal significance and historical impact of the Seon–Pure Land Double Practice tradition.
