This study aims to identify the common spiritual principles underlying Saint Thérèse of Lisieux’s “Little Way” and Fr. Yu-ryong Bang ’s spirituality of “Jeomseong(spirituality of the point)”. By comparing and analyzing their practical implications for Christian life, the research aims to theologically elucidate the structure of faith that leads believers “from the smallest things to God.” In modern society, widespread secularization and individualism have weakened human relationships and reduced faith from a personal communion with God to mere institutional practices or emotional consolation. In such a context, both spiritualities reveal a path to divine love not through extraordinary mystical experiences but through encountering God’s presence in ordinary daily events and realizing loving union with Him through smallness and self-emptying.
The research primarily draws on first-hand sources such as autobiographies, letters, homilies, and hymns written by Thérèse and Fr. Bang, complemented by a comparative literature review of existing scholarship. The first part explores the “Little Way” as formed within the 19th-century French socio-religious landscape and the Carmelite tradition, interpreting how its structure—comprising simplicity, humility, trust, spiritual poverty, and self-emptying(kenosis)—transforms the smallest acts of daily life into offerings of perfection. Thérèse’s path to holiness was not marked by extraordinary deeds but by facing human limitations in everyday life, recognizing the futility of self-reliant perfectionism, and entrusting herself entirely to God's unconditional love and providence.
Subsequently, the study briefly surveys the historical and ecclesial changes in the early 20th-century Korean and global Catholic Church, examining Fr. Bang’s spirituality of Jeomseong–Chimmook(Silence)–Daewol(meet the Father face to face)–Myeonhyeong(Eucharist), particularly the foundational principle of Jeomseong. This analysis explores how Fr. Bang integrates elements of Eastern philosophical thought into a theological framework for Korean Christian spirituality, rooted in the Western theological tradition. For him, the path toward union with Christ in the Eucharist requires the purification of self-centered desires and the cultivation of silence, which springs from Jeomseong. Such ascetic effort, he asserts, only gains meaning when human beings, recognizing their inability to save themselves, place complete trust in God’s merciful will and cooperate fully with His salvific work.
Finally, the comparative analysis demonstrates that both spiritualities share a movement of entrusting the self to God through recognition of one’s littleness before His omnipotence. St.Thérèse of Lisieux responded to God’s sanctifying love by striving to please Him joyfully in every small deed, while Fr. Bang emphasized wholehearted dedication even in trivial or humble tasks, seeking to remove distractions and act always in accordance with God’s will. Both reveal a path of drawing closer to God through sincere devotion expressed in the smallest acts of daily life.
