This thesis reexamines Thomas Keating’s “Centering Prayer” within the context of the Christian contemplative tradition and interprets St.John of the Cross’s articulated “Dark Night” as a journey that, mediated by the purification of the unconscious, leads to the “transforming union.” The central research question asks how, in a contemporary climate where prayer practice is prone to drift toward psychological technique or experientialism, Centering Prayer is organically connected with the Church’s liturgy, the Word, the sacraments, and communal life, and in what way its inner dynamics correspond to the purgative structure of the Dark Night.
Methodologically, on the basis of a theological–spiritual reading of primary sources from Keating and the Carmelite tradition, the study employs historical–spiritual comparison, a conceptual analysis informed by psychological notions, and the derivation of pastoral guidelines. In doing so, it proposes an interpretive framework that seeks to establish Centering Prayer not merely as a method of prayer but as an ecclesial contemplative journey.
The thesis defines Centering Prayer as repeated consent to God’s presence and action. Such receptive consent loosens defense mechanisms and brings repressed affects, memories, and attachment programs to the surface of consciousness, thereby facilitating their exposure to healing grace. This process functions as a mediator that enables passage through the nights of sense and spirit; its criteria of verification lie not in extraordinary experiences but in the fruits of the Spirit, daily charity, and the maturation of freedom and responsibility in relationships.
The contribution of this research is to reestablish Centering Prayer not as an affect-regulation technique but as an ecclesial contemplative journey, and to elucidate its structural correspondence with Dark Night theology through the dimension of the unconscious, thereby providing a framework that links personal sanctification with communal practice. In addition, it presents practical guidelines for practice, discernment, and accompaniment, thereby strengthening the universality of the contemplative life.
