로욜라의 성 이냐시오 영성과 선교와의 관계에 대한 고찰 = An Examination of the Relationship Between the Spirituality of St. Ignatius of Loyola and Mission

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 로욜라의 성 이냐시오가 확립한 영성과 가톨릭교회의 선교와의 관계를 조명하고, 그가 창립한 예수회의 초기 선교방식이 현대 사회 속 선교 사명 수행에 어떤 통찰을 제공할 수 있는지를 고찰하는데 목적이 있다. 급변하는 현대 사회와 세속화, 개인주의의 확산 속에서 가톨릭교회의 선교 방향성은 새로운 해석과 실천을 요구받고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 이냐시오 영성의 핵심인 모든 것 안에서 하느님을 발견하는 영성이 어떻게 적응주의 선교방식에 영향을 미쳤으며, 초기 예수회 선교사들을 통해 이를 구체적으로 실천한 사례를 분석하였다.
논문은 먼저 선교의 본질을 파악하기 위해 교회 역사와 성서 안에서 드러난 선교의 의미를 파악하고 선교 개념의 변천 과정을 고찰한 후, 이냐시오 영성의 신학적 의미와 실천적 특징을 탐구하였다. 다음으로는 프란치스코 하비에르, 알렉산드로 발리냐노, 마테오 리치 등 예수회 선교사들이 이냐시오의 영성을 어떻게 선교 현장에 적용하였는지를 분석함으로써, 이냐시오 영성과 적응주의 선교방식의 유기적 관계를 조명하였다. 나아가 현대 교회가 직면한 세속화, 문화적 상대주의, 개인주의 등 다양한 도전에 대응하기 위한 선교 전략으로 이냐시오 영성이 어떻게 적용될 수 있는지를 제시하였다.
결론적으로 본 논문은 이냐시오 영성이 단순한 개인적 신심이나 수련의 차원을 넘어, 오늘날의 급진적이고 다양한 선교 상황에서 유효한 통합적 영성으로 기능할 수 있음을 밝히며, 한국 가톨릭교회를 포함한 현대 가톨릭교회 선교 정신의 새로운 방향 모색에 기여하고자 한다.

This thesis aims to examine the relationship between the spirituality established by St. Ignatius of Loyola and the missionary work of the Catholic Church, with a particular focus on how the early missionary approach of the Society of Jesus, which he founded, can offer valuable insights for fulfilling missionary vocations in contemporary society. In an age marked by rapid social change, secularization, and the spread of individualism, the Catholic Church's missionary direction requires new interpretations and practices. In response, this study explores how the core of Ignatian spirituality—namely, "finding God in all things"—influenced an adaptation-based missionary approach and how early Jesuit missionaries embodied this spirituality in their mission work.
The thesis first seeks to understand the essence of mission by investigating the meaning and historical development of missionary activity within the Bible and Church tradition. It then delves into the theological significance and practical characteristics of Ignatian spirituality. Furthermore, it analyzes how missionaries such as Francis Xavier, Alessandro Valignano, and Matteo Ricci applied Ignatian spirituality in diverse mission contexts, thereby shedding light on the organic relationship between Ignatian spirituality and adaptive missionary methods. Finally, the study explores how this spirituality can be applied as a strategic response to modern challenges facing the Church, such as secularism, cultural relativism, and individualism.
In conclusion, this thesis argues that Ignatian spirituality goes beyond personal piety or ascetic discipline and functions as an integrated and effective spirituality for various complex missionary contexts today. It seeks to contribute to the reimagining of missionary spirit and direction in the contemporary Catholic Church, including within the Korean Catholic context.
