This thesis aims to explore the anthropological implications of Logos Christology—the core of the Christian faith—and to seek a theological solution to the crisis of human understanding faced by modern society. Since the modern era, the anthropocentric shift centered on subjectivity has established man as the master of the world. However, an autonomous view of humanity that excludes God has failed to answer the fundamental mystery of existence, ultimately driving humanity toward alienation and imbalance. In the face of that modern crisis, this study demonstrates that the mystery of the 'Word made flesh,' as proclaimed by traditional Christology with a focus on the Prologue of the Gospel of John and the Chalcedonian Creed, can serve as the essential foundation for a proper understanding of humanity.
The thesis is organized into three chapters. Chapter 1 investigates the biblical and philosophical foundations of Logos Christology through a study of the Prologue of the Gospel of John. The "Logos" in John’s Prologue inherits Old Testament traditions while utilizing the language of Hellenistic philosophy as a tool to proclaim Christian truth. Its essence lies in the pre-existence and incarnation of Christ—the eternal Logos and universal principle of the world entering into history. This establishes a Christological basis which points that Christ’s true divinity and humanity are directed toward human salvation.
Chapter 2 analyzes the Chalcedonian Definition to examine the development and significance of the "two-natures" Christology, while also exploring its modern reception in the Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes of the Second Vatican Council. Logos Christology was synthesized into the dogmatic formula of the distinction of two natures and their hypostatic union in Christ. This implies that the ontology of Christ serves as an indispensable ground for human salvation. Gaudium et Spes adopts this tradition within a contemporary context, shifting the focus of Logos Christology into the human existence and its relevant situations.
Chapter 3 synthesizes the soteriological significance of Logos Christology and presents it as an anthropological answer that unravels the mystery of human existence. It thus demonstrates that Logos Christology provides an anthropological foundation revealing that human beings are beings who find fulfillment in relationship with God. Christ’s mode of existence—characterized by self-emptying (kenosis) and being "for others"—reveals that the essence of human existence lies in solidarity and love. Therefore, human beings can attain true humanity through the process of "self-transcendence," imitating Christ who is the true image of God.
The "Word made flesh" transforms an abstract perception of universal truth into a concrete "Way" for individuals to follow in their lives, serving as a paradigm for realizing one's true mode of existence. This stands as a truth that leads humanity toward salvation despite the various forms of alienation and imbalances in self-understanding prevalent in modern society.
