For the development of a liquid rocket propulsion system, it is essential to conduct system-level interaction analysis and establish appropriate control strategies. However, when employing high-dimensional simulation tools such as CFD to perform this during the design stage, while component performance analysis is feasible, the high computational cost involved makes system-level analysis extremely difficult. To address this, a method involving low-dimensional modeling may be employed, which can produce the transient characteristics between components and the results of iterative calculations in a more efficient manner. Building upon these advantages, this study utilized low-dimensional modeling to simulate a 3-ton class gas generator cycle engine employing liquid oxygen/liquid methane. It analyzed performance variations resulting from probabilistic operational deviations in the engine components and comparatively evaluated pressurant control strategies for the liquid oxygen tank autogenous pressurization system.
First, we conduct a Monte-Carlo simulation to analyze performance variation according to the probabilistic operation deviation of engine components. Probabilistic distributions were assigned to key input variables such as pump total dynamic head, turbopump efficiency, turbine nozzle throat diameter, and thrust nozzle throat diameter. Iterative calculations were performed using a one-dimensional engine numerical model to evaluate variations in output variables, including main chamber pressure, main chamber mixture ratio, turbine inlet temperature, and nozzle thrust. This enabled the derivation of the correlation between input and output variables, and by comparing it with the Root Sum Square (RSS) analysis method, the efficiency and reliability of this analytical method were verified.
Next, to compare control strategies for the liquid oxygen tank autogenous pressurization system, proportional-integral (PI), bypass hysteresis (BP), and triple valve hysteresis (TV) control models were configured to compare tank ullage pressure and temperature responses, valve actuation signals, and control complexity. Analysis revealed that the BP strategy demonstrated the most outstanding performance in terms of structural simplicity and control stability. The TV strategy achieved the most precise pressure control, but it was identified that frequent valve operation could potentially compromise reliability.
In this manner, the potential for application in the design and operational stages of liquid rocket propulsion systems has been demonstrated through probabilistic and deterministic analysis based on low-dimensional numerical models.
