This study investigates the biographies of Sakyamuni Buddha that were compiled, published, and circulated in Korea from the Goryeo to the Joseon dynasty, with particular emphasis on their bibliographical development. Texts that narrate the life of Sakyamuni are generally referred to as biographies of Sakyamuni Buddha. Focusing on works that present Sakyamuni’s life in biographical form, this study analyzes their publication and circulation, structural composition, and compilation purposes from a bibliographical perspective.
Previous research on the biographies of Sakyamuni Buddha has been conducted in diverse fields such as Buddhist studies, intellectual history, Korean literature, and bibliography, addressing topics such as narrative literature, cited scriptures, narrative style and grammar, and editions of individual texts. However, comprehensive bibliographical studies that trace the flow and transformation of compilation, publication, and circulation from the Goryeo to the Joseon period remain limited. Understanding the development of the biographies of Sakyamuni Buddha in Korea goes beyond simply identifying existing works; it also involves exploring their publication patterns, compositional features, compilation contexts, and readership demands.
The biographies of Sakyamuni Buddha originated in India after Sakyamuni’s parinirvāṇa and were transmitted to China, eventually reaching Korea through Buddhist texts included in the Bunsadaejangdogam. Early works such as Seokgabo (釋迦譜), Seokgassibo (釋迦氏譜), and Juseokgayeoraeseongdogi (註釋迦如來成道記), which were compiled in China and incorporated into the Goryeo Buddhist canon, continued to circulate and be published throughout the Joseon dynasty. These texts served as foundational sources for subsequent biographies of Sakyamuni compiled in Korea, marking the initial stage of the biographical tradition of Sakyamuni Buddha in Korea. Notably, editions of Juseokgayeoraeseongdogi from both the Goryeo and Joseon periods have survived to the present day.
Subsequently, biographies of Sakyamuni compiled in Korea—such as Seokgayeoraehaengjeoksong (釋迦如來行蹟頌) and Seokbosangjeol (釋譜詳節), produced in the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods—inherited the narrative structures of earlier texts while reorganizing them according to their specific purposes and historical contexts. Seokgayeoraehaengjeoksong was compiled for monastic education and practice and continued to be published and used throughout the Joseon dynasty. Seokbosangjeol, compiled in the early Joseon period for royal commemorative rites and popular edification, is significant as a vernacular Buddhist text in Korea that directly adopts the Palsang (八相) narrative framework.
Furthermore, widely circulated texts of the late Joseon period—such as Seokssiwonryu (釋氏源流), Seokgayeoraesipjisuhaenggi (釋迦如來十地修行記), and Palsangnok (八相錄)—recast Sakyamuni’s life into accessible narratives through forms such as woodblock illustrations, vernacular storytelling, and the Eight Phases (Palsang). These works demonstrate how the biographies of Sakyamuni Buddha were received and transformed into popular literature.
This study systematically examines elements that have previously been discussed only in isolation—such as editions, publication and circulation patterns, cited scriptures, and narrative structures—according to the characteristics of each text. It also explores how the concept of the Eight Phases (Palsang) was integrated into narrative structures and traces its subsequent development. In doing so, this study provides a bibliographical synthesis of the evolution of the biographies of Sakyamuni Buddha in Korea from the Goryeo to the Joseon dynasty.
