This dissertation provides a comprehensive examination of the poetry and prose of Lee Geon-seung (李建昇, 1858∼1924), also known by his pen name Gyeongjae (耕齋), with particular attention to the intellectual and historical contexts in which his literary works were produced, as well as to their major stylistic and thematic characteristics. A Confucian scholar who inherited the academic tradition of the Ganghwa School (江華學派), Lee Geon-seung directly experienced the turbulent transition from the late Korean Empire to the Japanese colonial period. Even after Korea’s sovereignty was stripped away through two treaties forcibly imposed by imperial Japan in 1905 and 1910, he continued his literary composition and editorial activities under extreme conditions, including exile to Seogando in Manchuria.
In comparison with studies in intellectual or political history, literary research on Lee Geon-seung remains relatively limited. Even within literary scholarship, existing studies have largely focused on poetry written after his exile, thereby restricting a comprehensive understanding of his literary oeuvre. To address this gap, the present dissertation takes Haegyeongdangsucho (海耕堂收草), a manuscript held at the Kyujanggak, as its primary source. Through an integrated analysis of both poetry and prose composed before and after Lee’s exile, this study elucidates the overall character and literary-historical significance of his writings.
This study investigates the formative background of Lee Geon-seung’s literature from two perspectives: his life trajectory and inherited family tradition of learning, and his perceptions of and responses to the sociopolitical realities of his time. Influenced by the loyal martyrdom of his grandfather, Lee Si-won (李是遠), and by the familial transmission of Yangming Learning (陽明學) within the Ganghwa School, Lee developed a mode of thought that emphasized moral integrity and practical engagement. In particular, the national crises triggered by the two treaties exerted a decisive influence on the formation of both his intellectual outlook and his literary practice. His actions—including contemplation of martyrdom, the establishment of educational institutions, and eventual exile to Manchuria—constitute a pattern of response grounded in the Yangming principle of the unity of knowledge and action, which is closely intertwined with his literary production.
The characteristics of Lee’s poetic world are examined from four perspectives. First, the study analyzes how friendship and comradeship are poetically embodied through exchanges with Ganghwa School literati such as Hong Seung-heon (洪承憲) and Jeong Won-ha (鄭元夏). These poetic exchanges transcend private interaction, revealing a spiritual solidarity forged through shared perceptions of national collapse and exile. Second, by focusing on flower-recitation poems written after his exile, the study explores how sentiments of nostalgia and patriotism are articulated. Natural images such as chrysanthemums and plum blossoms function as symbolic mediators of lost homeland and national identity, emerging as defining features of exile literature. Third, through mourning poems commemorating deceased family members and close friends, the study examines how personal grief becomes interwoven with the collective emotional experience of national loss. Fourth, the study demonstrates that poems accompanied by extended titles or introductory prose enable readers to grasp more fully the circumstances of composition and the thematic significance of the works.
The characteristics of Lee’s prose are likewise analyzed from four perspectives. First, the study examines how his moral integrity is shaped and enacted through family tradition and social relationships. Amid national crisis, Lee reaffirms the moral legitimacy of the intellectual, using prose both to justify his own choices and to propose ethical standards for transmission to future generations. Second, through an analysis of biographical writings and epitaphs, the study demonstrates that Lee’s prose foregrounds anti-Japanese resolve and articulates a will for independence by presenting exemplary lives as moral models. Third, drawing on Paul Ricoeur’s concept of the “duty of memory” (devoir de mémoire), the study elucidates how Lee practices cultural remembrance through both the compilation of literary collections and the writing of prose. His editorial involvement in the publication of his elder brother Lee Geon-chang’s (李建昌) works—Myeongmidangjip (明美堂集) and Dokyeoksugi (讀易隨記)—is interpreted not merely as an act of personal commemoration, but as a conscious cultural practice aimed at preserving collective memory following the loss of national sovereignty. Fourth, by analyzing the use of dialogic narration in his prose, the study shows how this technique enhances vividness, sharpens characterization, and generates narrative tension.
By approaching Lee Geon-seung’s literature from an integrated perspective encompassing both poetry and prose, this dissertation illuminates, in a multidimensional manner, how a Confucian intellectual of the late Korean Empire and Japanese colonial periods responded to historical reality through literary practice. It is hoped that this study will contribute to a fuller recognition of the diversity and continuity of classical literature during Korea’s modern transitional period, and will encourage further research into the literary transmission and development of the Jeonju Lee clan of the Ganghwa School.
