This study examines three books commemorating military commanders that were compiled by royal order under King Jeongjo(正祖): Kim Chungjang-gong Yusa (『金忠壯公遺事』) on Kim Deok-ryeong(金德齡), Im Chungmin-gong Silgi (『林忠愍公實記』) on Im Gyeong-eop(林慶業), and Yang Daesama Silgi (『梁大司馬實記』) on Yang Dae-bak(梁大樸). The purpose of this paper is to clarify the bibliographical characteristics and significance of books commemorating military commanders compiled under King Jeongjo(正祖) by conducting a bibliographical examination of their compilation and publication processes, comparing and reviewing their base texts as well as related materials referenced or cited in their compilation, and analyzing patterns of textual modification that emerged during the process of compilation and publication.
Chapters II, III, and IV respectively examine the background, compilation, and publication processes of Kim Chungjang-gong Yusa(『金忠壯公遺事』), Im Chungmin-gong Silgi(『林忠愍公實紀』), and Yang Daesama Silgi(『梁大司馬實記』), followed by a comparative review of each book’s base texts and the related materials referenced or cited during compilation.
As a result, Chapter II confirms the existence of Kim Chungjang Yusa (『金忠壯遺事』), which had not been mentioned in previous studies on Kim Chungjang-gong Yusa(『金忠壯公遺事』), and establishes that Kim Chungjang Yusa(『金忠壯遺事』) was first published in 1789 (the 13th year of King Jeongjo(正祖)), earlier than Kim Chungjang-gong Yusa(『金忠壯公遺事』). Through an examination of King Jeongjo(正祖)’s royal sacrificial writings (euje chije-mun(御製致祭文)) included in Kim Chungjang Yusa(『金忠壯遺事』) and Kim Chungjang-gong Yusa(『金忠壯公遺事』), the royal sacrificial text preserved in the Jangseogak(藏書閣) of the Academy of Korean Studies(韓國學中央硏究院), and related materials such as the Ilseongnok(『日省錄』), this study reveals that Kim Chungjang-gong Yusa(『金忠壯公遺事』) supplemented omissions found in the previously published Kim Chungjang Yusa(『金忠壯遺事』) by adding King Jeongjo(正祖)’s royal preface, a stele inscription written by Seo Yu-rin(徐有隣), and Kim Deok-ryeong(金德齡)’s autograph manuscripts. Moreover, it demonstrates that Kim Chungjang-gong Yusa(『金忠壯公遺事』) underwent extensive re-compilation in terms of content and structural organization before being published after April 1791 (the 15th year of King Jeongjo(正祖)). A comparison of the structure and original texts of Kim Chungjang Yusa(『金忠壯遺事』) and Kim Chungjang-gong Yusa(『金忠壯公遺事』) further reveals clear changes in editorial practices during the re-compilation process, including deliberate deletions of content and the addition of heroic and legendary elements.
Chapter III shows that Im Chungmin-gong Silgi(『林忠愍公實紀』) was published in 1791 (the 15th year of King Jeongjo(正祖)) and, unlike other commemorative books on military commanders such as Kim Chungjang-gong Yusa(『金忠壯公遺事』) and Yang Daesama Silgi(『梁大司馬實記』), which were printed as woodblock editions at provincial military headquarters, it was published in metal movable type (Jeongyuja(丁酉字)) at the central government office Gyoseogwan, together with Yi Chungmu-gong Jeonseo(『李忠武公全書』), a collected works of Yi Sun-sin(李舜臣). Another distinctive feature is that an editorial title page (pyeonje-myeon(編題面)) was arranged at the beginning of the book. This chapter also demonstrates that whereas Kim Chungjang-gong Yusa(『金忠壯公遺事』) and Yang Daesama Silgi(『梁大司馬實記』) include, in appendices, records of the achievements of figures surrounding the main subjects—such as Kim Deok-hong(金德弘) and Kim Deok-bo(金德普), brothers of Kim Deok-ryeong(金德齡), and Yang Gyeong-u(梁慶遇) and Yang Hyeong-u(梁亨遇), sons of Yang Dae-bak(梁大樸)—Im Chungmin-gong Silgi(『林忠愍公實紀』) confines its contents strictly to the deeds of the biographical subject Im Gyeong-eop(林慶業) and minimizes references to surrounding figures such as his brothers. From this, the study infers that King Jeongjo(正祖) evaluated Im Gyeong-eop(林慶業) and Yi Sun-sin(李舜臣) more highly than Kim Deok-ryeong(金德齡) and Yang Dae-bak(梁大樸), and that this evaluation was reflected in the compilation of these books. Furthermore, through a comparison with Pildongnok(『必東錄』), presumed to be the base text of Im Chungmin-gong Silgi(『林忠愍公實紀』), the chapter shows that editorial practices similar to those found in Kim Chungjang-gong Yusa(『金忠壯公遺事』), such as deliberate deletions of content, also appeared during its compilation.
Chapter IV confirms, through Mugeukjip (『无極集』), the literary collection of Yang Dae-bak(梁大樸)’s sixth-generation descendant Yang Ju-ik(梁周翊), that the compilation of Yang Daesama Silgi(『梁大司馬實記』) was completed in 1799 (the 23rd year of King Jeongjo(正祖)) and that the book was published in 1801 (the first year of King Sunjo(純祖)). It also clarifies that the master copies of Yang Daesama Silgi(『梁大司馬實記』) consisted of Cheonggyejip (『靑溪集』) by Yang Dae-bak(梁大樸), Cheonggye Changuirok (『靑溪倡義錄』), Jehojip (『霽湖集』) by Yang Gyeong-u(梁慶遇), and poems titled Dong-yae-si(東崖詩) that had been transmitted within Yang Ju-ik(梁周翊)’s family. In addition, the study identifies evidence that Yang Ju-ik(梁周翊) was deeply involved in the compilation project of Yang Daesama Silgi(『梁大司馬實記』) and confirms that his use of somewhat fictionalized elements to emphasize Yang Dae-bak(梁大樸)’s achievements in the transcribed Cheonggye Changuirok(『靑溪倡義錄』) was substantially reflected in Yang Daesama Silgi(『梁大司馬實記』) as well.
In conclusion, the three books—Kim Chungjang-gong Yusa(『金忠壯公遺事』), Im Chungmin-gong Silgi(『林忠愍公實紀』), and Yang Daesama Silgi(『梁大司馬實記』)—are products of King Jeongjo(正祖)’s state-led project to commemorate loyal subjects. By presenting exemplary models of military commanders, these works go beyond the commemoration of individual figures and were compiled in conjunction with the political objective of strengthening royal authority. Throughout this process, editorial practices aimed at idealizing the subjects are evident, allowing these books commemorating military commanders compiled under King Jeongjo(正祖) to be categorized as didactic texts intended for moral edification.
