This study aims to examine the applicability of the concept of espaces pré-sémantisés (pre-semanticized spaces) developed for French Sign Language (LSF) to the spatial structure of Korean Sign Language (KSL), and to explore the feasibility of a semantic–syntactic analysis of KSL based on this framework. Existing research on KSL syntax has largely been conducted within functionalist analytical approaches derived from spoken languages. However, KSL fundamentally differs from spoken languages in that it is based on a visual–gestural modality and forms an iconic linguistic system.
In LSF, it is argued that linguistic structure emerges through the interaction of sign parameters, spatiality, and iconicity. This view is formalized in the theory of dynamiques iconiques (iconic dynamics), which explains the gradual formation process whereby sign parameters expand from phonological units to syntactic units. In addition, pre-semanticized space is defined as a semantic–syntactic space in which syntactic structures are formed by assigning the semantic roles of arguments to specific spatial locations within a dialogic instance (instance de dialogue), and these spaces are classified into six types. Based on this theoretical framework, the present study investigates the characteristics of pre-semanticized spaces in KSL.
The research data consist of the KSL corpus released by the National Institute of the Korean Language in 2024. Spatial information was annotated using the annotation tool ELAN. The results of the first- and second-stage analyses show that, in KSL as well, semantic roles tend to be assigned to specific spatial locations in a manner similar to that observed in LSF, although certain differences were identified in terms of positional and functional aspects.
From a semantic–syntactic perspective, this study suggests the appropriateness of an analytical approach that reflects the three-dimensional and simultaneous syntactic properties of sign languages, rather than relying on the linear analytical methods developed for spoken languages. This perspective may provide a new direction for future research on KSL syntax and contribute to the development of foundational materials for sign language education. At the same time, the data used in this study presented limitations in the detailed observation of non-manual elements, such as eye gaze, and three-dimensional space. Furthermore, due to quantitative constraints in the dataset, it was not possible to systematize pre-semanticized spaces comprehensively or to analyze all types of syntactic spaces exhaustively. Therefore, more in-depth follow-up studies are required to more precisely identify pre-semanticized spaces in KSL, including research on complex syntactic spaces that incorporate narrative-level locus
