Opera is a synthetic art form that integrates literature, theatre, music, visual arts, and dance, and it conveys narrative through the dual media of language and music. As narratology has expanded beyond literary studies into theatre, film, and music, the narrative structures of opera have emerged as an important object of analysis for understanding processes of cultural identity formation, collective memory, and national narrative construction. Nevertheless, existing research has largely concentrated on compositional styles or aesthetic interpretation, leaving insufficient systematic investigation into how the linguistic structures of libretti—specifically the arrangement of language, emotions, and themes—contribute to the construction of cultural narratives and national discourse.
Particularly in the case of Chinese original opera, the genre began with the reception of Western operatic forms and has since evolved into an art that embodies both aesthetic ambition and social significance. Yet empirical studies on how this dual narrative structure manifests on the linguistic level remain limited. Since 2012, shifts in cultural policy during the New Era have repositioned opera as an art form tasked with embodying the “Chinese story” and cultural confidence. In this context, the need to analyze how the linguistic expression of original operas participates in the formation of discourse has become even more evident.
Against this background, the present study conducts a text-mining–based analysis of libretti from New-Era Chinese original operas, aiming to empirically elucidate the structural relationships through which linguistic expression shapes cultural narratives and national discourse. The research questions address: (1) the formation process of cultural narratives; (2) the coexistence of artistic expression and political expression; (3) the modes through which national discourse is represented; (4) the analytical validity of natural language processing methods; and (5) the identification of the dual narrative structure in New-Era original opera. To this end, narrative patterns were extracted by focusing on lexical frequency, emotional distribution, and topic modeling; the quantitative results were interpreted using the CSL affective system to analyze the emotional and semantic characteristics embedded in the operas’ linguistic structures.
The corpus consists of sixteen original operas produced between 2012 and 2024 that received major support from the National Arts Fund and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Libretti—including performance records, published scripts, and versions provided by creative teams—were compiled into a structured corpus. Preprocessing involved morphological analysis using Jieba and KoNLPy, stop-word removal, and construction of term–document matrices. The analytical procedure included lexical frequency analysis, sentiment analysis (using DLUT, LIWC, and NTUSD), LDA-based topic modeling, and application of the CSL affective framework. Visualization and model verification (coherence score) were conducted within a Python-based environment (Gensim, Pandas, Matplotlib) to ensure analytical robustness.
The findings are as follows. First, lexical frequency analysis revealed repeated occurrences of key terms related to national discourse—such as “motherland,” “devotion,” “sacrifice,” “revitalization,” and “the people”—indicating a close linkage between the linguistic structure of libretti and national values. Second, sentiment analysis showed that positive emotions (pride, hope, respect) and negative emotions (sadness, anger, fear) coexisted, generating narrative tension and emotional depth. Third, topic modeling identified multilayered themes—including “sacrifice and devotion,” “national rejuvenation,” “love of family and country,” and “heroic imagery”—and revealed intersecting thematic structures. Fourth, interpretation through the CSL emotional system indicated that New-Era original opera constructs a mechanism of internalizing national ideology through emotional structures centered on family, community, and responsibility. In particular, the high frequency of words such as “mother,” “family,” and “hometown” suggests the operation of an affective mediating system that links everyday emotion to national values.
This study integrates quantitative and qualitative analyses of the linguistic structures of original opera to empirically demonstrate how cultural narratives and national discourse are co-constituted within the genre. The findings provide an analytical foundation for understanding how original opera simultaneously embodies artistic expression and political narrative, and they contribute to methodological innovation in digital-based arts research. Furthermore, by confirming that text mining can serve as an effective analytical tool in humanities-based narrative studies, this research offers valuable foundational material for performing arts studies and cultural policy research.
However, this study is limited by its focus on libretti, which does not fully incorporate non-linguistic elements such as music, staging, direction, and audience response. Future research should undertake more fine-grained analyses by incorporating multimodal approaches based on audio and video data, sentiment-network analysis of audience responses, and comparative studies across multilingual libretti to further elucidate the emotional and discursive structures of contemporary original opera.
