This study explored how childcare teachers’ empowerment and perceived teaching efficacy are associated with teacher–child interaction, with particular attention to the mediating role of teacher efficacy.
Participants were 248 childcare teachers employed at daycare centers located in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions of South Korea. Data were collected through self-administered questionnaires measuring empowerment, teacher efficacy, and teacher–child interaction. After excluding incomplete and unreliable responses, a total of 229 questionnaires were included in the final analysis.
Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS version 22.0, including reliability testing, descriptive statistics, and Pearson correlation analyses. Mediation effects were examined using the PROCESS macro (Model 4, version 4.1).
The analysis indicated that teachers’ empowerment was positively associated with the quality of teacher–child interaction. Teacher efficacy also showed a significant positive relationship with teacher–child interaction and was positively related to empowerment. Furthermore, when teacher efficacy was included in the model, the direct relationship between empowerment and teacher–child interaction was no longer significant, indicating a full mediating effect. These findings suggest that empowerment influences teacher–child interaction indirectly through teacher efficacy.
The results highlight the importance of enhancing teacher efficacy grounded in empowerment in order to promote high-quality interactions between teachers and infants and toddlers. This study contributes foundational evidence for improving teacher–child interaction by emphasizing the roles of empowerment and teacher efficacy in early childhood education settings.
