The purpose of this thesis is to analyze and verify how the Davidic Covenant is theologically reinterpreted in Psalm 89 through a comparative study of the biblical passages containing Nathan’s Oracle(2 Sam 7,1-17; 1 Chr 17,1-15). The Davidic Covenant plays a crucial theological role in affirming the continuity of Israel’s monarchy, the identity of God’s people, and the unfolding of God’s salvific plan. It promises the establishment of an everlasting kingdom in which God’s reign is realized through David’s descendants of David, and it serves as a cornerstone for the expectation of the Messiah.
The most representative biblical texts that convey this covenant are the passages of Nathan’s Oracle(2 Sam 7,1-17; 1 Chr 17,1-15). The theological themes of these texts are clearly echoed in the Psalms, which encompass Israel’s history and faith. In particular, Psalm 89 is a representative psalm that deepens and expands the content of the Davidic Covenant on the basis of Nathan’s Oracle. Not only does Psalm 89 share common theological motifs, vocabularies, and expressions with the historical books, but it also gives voice in the form of lament(Ps 89,39–52), to the historical reality of the failure and downfall of the Davidic monarchy, an aspect not addressed in the historical narratives. This study analyzes how this lament psalm reveals hope for the restoration of the Davidic dynasty through God’s unfailing mercy and faithfulness, and aims to elucidate the distinctive theological perspective and message of hope inherent in Psalm 89.
Chapter Ⅰ surveys the concept of ‘covenant’ throughout the Old Testament, then organizes and clarifies the central theological concepts of the Davidic Covenant. This includes an exegetical analysis of Nathan’s Oracle(2 Sam 7,1-17; 1 Chr 17,1-15) and a comparison of the two passages to highlight the key theological themes of perpetuity and legitimacy of the Davidic dynasty. Chapter Ⅱ offers a linguistic and biblical-theological exegesis of Psalm 89, examining how it emphasizes the gracious nature of the Davidic Covenant mentioned in Nathan’s Oracle and how it paradoxically portrays the grim reality of the covenant’s apparent breach. Chapter Ⅲ compares Nathan’s Oracle with Psalm 89 and presents a comprehensive synthesis of the psalm’s unique theological reinterpretation of the Davidic Covenant.
In conclusion, Psalm 89 presents a way to expect salvation and restoration through faith even in a situation of despair, ultimately proclaiming the eschatological hope of salvation through the Messiah(“the Anointed One”). Furthermore, the psalm enlarges the fulfillment of the Davidic Covenant through the Messiah, beyond the limited expectation of Israel’s restoration, to a theological theme of universal salvation for all humanity. Thus, the psalm widely proclaims God’s steadfast love and faithfulness, who keeps the covenant despite human errors and failures. The psalmist exhorts all who are invited to the blessed identity of God’s people to trust in the Lord, to maintain hope even amid dire circumstances, to recall God’s covenant, to believe in His merciful and faithful nature, and to remember always His promise of salvation.
