This study examined the mediating effect of self-concept clarity and maladaptive self-focused attention, as well as the moderating effect of ego-resilience, in the relationship between covert narcissism and feelings of emptiness in early adulthood. A total of 297 adults aged 19 to 35 across the South Korea participated in an online survey. The major findings were as follows.
First, significant correlations were found among emptiness, covert narcissism, self-concept clarity, maladaptive self-focused attention, and ego-resilience. Emptiness, covert narcissism, and maladaptive self-focused attention showed positive associations with one another, whereas self-concept clarity and ego-resilience were negatively associated with these variables.
Second, the sequential mediating effects of self-concept clarity and maladaptive self-focused attention in the relationship between covert narcissism and emptiness were significant. Higher levels of covert narcissism predicted lower self-concept clarity, which increased maladaptive self-focused attention, ultimately heightening feelings of emptiness.
Third, the moderating effect of ego-resilience on the relationship between maladaptive self-focused attention and emptiness was not supported, and the moderated mediation effect of ego-resilience in the process by which covert narcissism influences emptiness through self-concept clarity and maladaptive self-focused attention was also not significant. This suggests that ego-resilience may have operated as a variable more directly related to emptiness rather than serving a moderating role.
Overall, this study expands the understanding of psychological mechanisms underlying emptiness and provides foundational insights for developing more refined intervention models and practical strategies.
