This study aims to analyze both domestic and international abortion discourses by applying Julia Kristeva’s theory of abjection, as articulated in Pouvoirs de l’horreur, and to demonstrate that within the Church’s teaching on abortion are contained both the spirit of respect for life and the spirit of care for the wounded other. Specifically, this study examines abortion discourses articulated by certain feminist actors in the Central African Republic and South Korea. Kristeva’s concept of abjection is employed as a critical methodological tool for this analysis. In this context, “abjection” refers to a psychological phenomenon in which the subject, in the process of formation, establishes its boundaries by expelling what is impure, foreign, or disturbing.
By applying the concept of abjection, this study identifies the presence of mechanisms of exclusion and rejection within the abortion discourses in both countries, revealing the psychological dynamics by which the unfamiliar or threatening is cast beyond the boundaries of acceptance. This analysis indicates that some feminist abortion discourses contain underlying logics of exclusion and marginalization. Nonetheless, such critical engagement with abortion discourse opens a new perspective on the Church’s teachings. While the Church’s position has long emphasized respect for fetal life, this study highlights that it also inherently embodies a concern for women who have undergone abortion. This pastoral orientation aligns, in principle, with the concerns and objectives of certain feminist groups interested in psychological care.
Through this discussion, the study demonstrates that the Church’s teaching on abortion already encompasses both the principle of respect for life and the foundation for pastoral care. Consequently, this study provides a meaningful interpretive framework for re-examining the Church’s position in a way that empathetically engages with the suffering of women who have experienced abortion.
