초심상담자의 진로불확실성 경험 : 실존의 네 가지 차원에 기반을 둔 프레임워크 분석

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 초심상담자가 경험하는 진로불확실성을 다차원적으로 탐색하고 그 구조와 양상을 체계적으로 규명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 van Deurzen이 제시한 실존의 네 가지 차원, 즉 물리적 차원, 사회적 차원, 개인적 차원, 영적 차원을 분석틀로 설정하고, 연역적 주제분석법인 프레임워크분석 (Framework Analysis)을 적용하였다. 연구 참여자는 상담 관련 석사과정 재 학 이상이며 상담경력 3년 이하의 초심상담자 14명으로, 반구조화 면담을 통 해 수집된 자료를 프레임워크분석의 연역적 분석 절차에 따라 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 초심상담자의 진로불확실성은 네 가지 실존 차원 아래 총 11개 의 대범주로 구성되었다. 물리적 차원에서는 ‘경제적 여건 및 고용 조건의 불 확실성’, ‘업무 환경의 불확실성’, ‘신체적 건강관리의 불확실성’이, 사회적 차원 에서는 ‘사회적 인정의 불확실성’, ‘관계의 불확실성’, ‘사회적 네트워크의 불확 실성’이 도출되었다. 개인적 차원에서는 ‘상담 역량의 불확실성’, ‘세부 진로 선 택의 불확실성’, ‘상담자 정체성의 불확실성’이, 영적 차원에서는 ‘의미 및 가치 의 불확실성’, ‘가치관 및 윤리의 불확실성’이 확인되었다. 네 가지 차원의 코딩 빈도는 균등하지 않았으며, 개인적 차원에서 코딩 빈 도가 143회로 가장 높게 나타났고, 사회적 차원은 85회, 물리적 차원은 74회였 으며, 영적 차원은 31회로 가장 낮았다. 이러한 분포는 초심상담자들이 실제로 인식하는 불확실성의 초점이 개인적 차원에 상대적으로 많이 기울어져 있음을 시사하지만, 이는 중요도의 우열을 의미하는 것은 아니다. 더 나아가 물리적, 사회적, 개인적 차원의 경험들은 여러 지점에서 서로 중첩되고 영향을 주고받 으며, 영적 차원과 연결되어 재해석되는 양상을 보였다. 본 연구는 초심상담자의 진로 과정에서 나타나는 불확실성 경험의 다차원적 구조와 양상을 구체적으로 제시하였다는 점에서 학문적 의의를 지닌다. 특히 기존 논의에서 상대적으로 충분히 조명되지 않았던 영적 차원을 독립적으로 분석함으로써, 진로불확실성 논의를 물리적 차원, 사회적 차원, 개인적 차원에 더해 의미, 가치, 윤리의 차원까지 확장하였다. 이를 통해 초심상담자의 진로 불확실성을 특정 차원에 국한하지 않고, 네 가지 실존 차원을 통합적이고 균 형 있게 조망할 필요성을 제시하였다는 데 의의가 있다. 마지막으로, 논의에서는 초심상담자의 진로불확실성을 이해하고 지원하기 위한 교육, 훈련, 상담 개입의 방향을 제시하고 네 가지 차원별 특성을 반영한 교육 프로그램과 구조적 체계 마련의 필요성을 강조하였으며, 이어 연구의 의 의와 함께 제한점 및 후속 연구 방향을 논의하였다. 주요어: 초심상담자, 진로불확실성, 실존의 네 가지 차원, 프레임워크분석

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study was to explore the career uncertainty experienced by novice counselors from a multidimensional perspective and to systematically examine its structure and patterns. To this end, van Deurzen’s four dimensions of existence—namely the physical, social, personal, and spiritual dimensions—were adopted as the analytical framework, and Framework Analysis, a deductive thematic analysis method, was applied. The participants were 14 novice counselors who were enrolled in or had completed a master’s degree or higher in counseling-related fields and had no more than three years of counseling experience. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed according to the deductive analytic procedures of Framework Analysis.
The results indicated that the career uncertainty of novice counselors consisted of a total of 11 major categories across the four dimensions of existence. Within the physical dimension, the categories identified were Uncertainty regarding economic conditions and employment terms, Uncertainty about the work environment, and Uncertainty about physical health management. Within the social dimension, Uncertainty about social recognition, Uncertainty in relationships, and Uncertainty about social networks were derived. Within the personal dimension, the categories included Uncertainty about counseling competence, Uncertainty about specific career choices, and Uncertainty about counselor identity. Within the spiritual dimension, Uncertainty regarding meaning and values and Uncertainty regarding value systems and ethics were identified.
Coding frequencies across the four dimensions were not evenly distributed. The personal dimension showed the highest frequency with 143 codes, followed by the social dimension with 85 codes and the physical dimension with 74 codes, while the spiritual dimension showed the lowest frequency with 31 codes. This distribution suggests that novice counselors tend to perceive and articulate career uncertainty more prominently at the personal level; however, this does not indicate a hierarchy of importance among the dimensions. Furthermore, experiences within the physical, social, and personal dimensions overlapped and influenced each other at multiple points and were reinterpreted through their connections with the spiritual dimension.
This study holds academic significance in that it presents a detailed account of the multidimensional structure and patterns of uncertainty experienced in the career development process of novice counselors. In particular, by independently analyzing the spiritual dimension—an area that has been relatively underexplored in previous discussions—this study expands the discourse beyond physical, social, and personal dimensions to include meaning, values, and ethics. In doing so, the study underscores the importance of understanding career uncertainty among novice counselors through an integrated and balanced perspective encompassing all four existential dimensions.
Finally, the discussion offers implications for education, training, and counseling interventions aimed at understanding and supporting novice counselors’ career uncertainty, emphasizing the need for educational programs and structural systems reflecting the characteristics of each of the four dimensions. The discussion concludes with a consideration of the study’s contributions, limitations, and directions for future research.
