For Augustine, eternal happiness consists in the eternal contemplation of truth. To contemplate truth eternally, both the object―truth―and its subject―the soul―must be eternal. Since Augustine identifies truth with God Himself, he would have already presupposed the immortality of truth; consequently, it is the immortality of the soul that becomes the primary object of his inquiry. Augustine’s argument for the soul’s immortality unfolds from Soliloquia II through De Immortalitate Animae. Rather than presenting a single, uniform proof, the work displays a shift toward a “final argument” in its latter part. From Soliloquia II through the opening sections of De Immortalitate Animae, the argument proceeds as follows: a discipline(disciplina) is immortal; this immortal discipline exists in the soul; therefore, the soul is immortal. However, this line of reasoning is beset with logical and theological difficulties. From the middle of De Immortalitate Animae onward, the role of grounding the soul’s immortality―previously assigned to a discipline―is transferred to reason(ratio). In the latter part of the work, Augustine sets forth an argument with a different structure: because the soul is necessarily bound to reason, and reason is immortal, the soul itself must be immortal. This is clearly a distinct argument from the one presented in the initial part, and the terminus of Augustine’s argument for the soul’s immortality must be located in this final argument. This paper seeks to show that this shift of arguments is an intentional feature of Augustine’s compositional design and that the final argument extends into his later thought, thereby arguing that De Immortalitate Animae occupies a pivotal place within Augustine’s overall philosophy. Although the work remains unfinished, its core insights were never abandoned but continued to shape his subsequent philosophy.
