This study demonstrates that K-pop idols and fandoms interact through mechanisms of projection and integration, generating new storytelling structures and expanding the industry. The relationship between idols and fandoms has shifted from a vertical structure to a horizontal structure in which mutual communication is possible. In particular, as digital technology has developed, fandom participation has increased, and fandoms have helped expand idols by producing online-based content. A representative example of this can be found in BTS’s entry into the United States. In this way, the active participation of fandoms has brought about various changes in the industry, raising the status of K-pop and leading to the expansion of its cultural and international position.
This tendency can also be confirmed in previous studies, which have focused on the growing influence of fandoms and examined their functions and activities. Whereas early K-pop fandoms occupied the position of followers and recipients, contemporary fandoms are recognized as active creators with planning capacity and agency. As the nature of fandoms has changed, interactions between idols and fandoms have also become more active, resulting in the expansion of K-pop. This study sought to identify the implications inherent in idol–fandom interactions by analyzing this process according to storytelling structures. To this end, three research questions were established. First, how is the fandom unconscious projected onto K-pop idol music reproduced by fandoms to generate storytelling? Second, does storytelling generated by fandoms influence idol music? Third, what kind of storytelling structures have been formed through interactions between idols and fandoms?
In the K-pop industry, it is a common approach to divide idol groups by generation and analyze the cultural and industrial influence of each generation. Generational classification functions as an important starting point for understanding the structural characteristics of the K-pop industry and fandoms, as well as a key reference for developing subsequent cultural-historical and industrial discussions. Although generations are generally classified according to debut period and activity patterns, rapid technological development and accelerated change make clear generational distinctions difficult, and detailed classification methods vary depending on the researcher’s analytical perspective or research purpose. In this study, K-pop is divided into four generations according to idols’ musical characteristics and activity patterns, as well as fandom activities and content characteristics.
The research subjects were broadly divided into idol music and fandom content. Idol music consisted of the debut song lyrics and music videos of representative boy groups and girl groups from the first through fourth generations. Fandom content was defined to include online-based content that fandoms autonomously and voluntarily create, as well as content produced to inform the processes through which fandom culture is generated and disseminated. Because K-pop is structured around a gendered binary of boy groups and girl groups, and because fandom unconsciousness is projected onto idol music, the research methodology employed Carl Gustav Jung’s concept of the collective unconscious—specifically the archetypes of anima, animus, and the Self—as well as the mechanisms of projection and integration.
Chapters 3 and 4 examine the patterns through which animus and anima types, as well as mechanisms of projection and integration, appear in boy groups, girl groups, and their fandoms. First-generation K-pop idol music began by implementing anima and animus projection based on gender archetypes, and fandom content reproduced these projections while generating new anima and animus types, thereby creating new storytelling. The generated types were remediated in second-generation idol music, and second-generation fandom content either intensified anima and animus projection or removed such projection, showing integration into the Self archetype. This is interpreted as the first case demonstrating the planner-like aspect of fandoms.
Third-generation idol music was influenced by second-generation fandom content and implemented anima and animus projection through external styling, while integration into the Self archetype was revealed in the thematic consciousness of the music. This is interpreted as the formation of new storytelling centered on self-discourse, in contrast to the first and second generations, which generated storytelling based on gender archetypes. Third-generation fandom content also revealed overlapping projection and integration, showing similar tendencies. In the fourth generation, projection was removed from idol music, whereas projection was emphasized in fandom content.
Chapter 5 examines the meanings of the projection and integration mechanisms generated by idols and fandoms, as well as the meaning of the generative storytelling structure termed “self-realizational storytelling.” In K-pop, projection follows a logos-oriented principle, while integration follows an eros-oriented principle. That is, projection symbolizes the basic norms required of K-pop, while integration signifies overall connectivity. First, projection was analyzed by classifying its implications into three categories: disposition, relational narrative, and fandom function. First, the basic dispositions required of idols consist of two aspects: goal orientation, which refers to continuously training professional skills and remaining faithful to their vocation, and relational affinity, which refers to maintaining close relationships with fandoms and group members. Second, as generations evolve, it is required that anima and animus projection in male–female relationships be removed and replaced by self-discourse. Finally, boy group fandoms exhibited nurturing and planning-oriented characteristics, whereas girl group fandoms exhibited mirror-oriented and aspirational characteristics.
Meanwhile, integration symbolizes overall connectivity, which represents the humanistic and artistic value of K-pop. Integration into the Self archetype reaches the deepest level of the psyche and encompasses such a vast domain that its characteristics and contents cannot be specified. The Self archetype, which is both the most universal and the most difficult to verbalize, can be explained through thematic consciousness when analogized to a work. Second-generation fandom content and third-generation idol music, which began to show mechanisms of integration, move beyond gender archetype-based storytelling and generate storytelling of self-discourse and self-expression. These convey relatively more universal and philosophical messages and are understood to expand the value of K-pop.
This study identifies the process by which storytelling is generated through the interaction between idol music and fandom content, where mechanisms of projection and integration intersect, as “self-realizational storytelling.” This structure has three characteristics. First, even within the same generation, projection–integration mechanisms between idols and fandoms exhibit temporal gaps. Second, the projection–integration mechanism structure is remediated by generation and shows patterns of adventure and return. Third, return does not signify completion but a new beginning, through which self-realizational storytelling expands into a spiral cyclical structure. These characteristics yield the following implications: first, the need for an open environment oriented toward fandom coexistence in K-pop; second, the need for close observation of fandom content; and third, the need for idols to maintain resonance with fandoms through musical expression.
This study is significant in that it attempts to elucidate media, cultural content, and humanistic values by verbalizing invisible sensibilities in the process through which the unconscious is generated into storytelling via projection and integration mechanisms. In addition, it has industrial significance in that it derives implications by identifying an inherent generative storytelling structure through idol–fandom interactions.
However, the study has limitations in that it adopts a literature-based research methodology and theoretical sampling of research subjects, raising concerns about subjective researcher intervention. Future studies would be enriched by supporting the findings through surveys or focus group interviews (FGIs). Furthermore, comparative studies with fandoms of other cultures or fields could demonstrate that “self-realizational storytelling” is a distinctive characteristic of K-pop. These limitations are left for future research.
