Emotional facial expressions are known to modulate attentional scope, potentially influencing the spatial range within which social cues-such as gaze or head orientation-are processed. The present study investigated whether facial expression-induced emotions alter attentional scope and thereby affect the cueing effects elicited by social signals. In Experiment 1, participants viewed centrally presented positive, negative, or neutral facial expressions, followed by gaze cues shifting left or right in neutral faces positioned at varying eccentricities, above and below the central face. Experiment 2 replaced gaze cues with head orientation cues. Reaction times (RTs) and cue-target congruency were analyzed using repeated-measures ANOVAs. Across both experiments, positive facial expressions broadened attentional scope, enabling gaze or head cue perception at wider eccentricities. In contrast, negative expressions narrowed attentional scope, producing cueing effects only at smaller eccentricities. Neutral expressions yielded intermediate effects. Notably in Experiment 1, the modulation of attentional scope was more pronounced in the lower visual field. These findings suggest that emotions shape the spatial distribution of attention, thereby influencing the effectiveness of social cues depending on the extent of attentional scope. This research offers novel evidence for the interplay between emotion, attention, and social cue processing, highlighting the role of attentional scope as mediating mechanism in dynamic social perception.
