As the utilization of manipulators continues to expand across industrial, medical, service, and research fields, there is an increasing demand for robotic systems capable of performing complex and precise manipulation tasks, particularly those requiring simultaneous position and force control. While conventional teaching pendant methods offer high precision in positioning, they face significant limitations in defining complex, dexterous tasks. Furthermore, they suffer from low operational efficiency and increased control complexity when applied to multi-degree-of-freedom collaborative robots. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a Master–Slave teaching system based on imitation learning, designed to effectively collect and learn from user demonstration data.
The proposed imitation learning algorithm is an extended version of the Action Chunking with Transformers (ACT). In this framework, the demonstration data integrates both Cartesian position and the force/torque vector (Wrench) as observation inputs, enabling the explicit learning of position–force interactions. Consequently, the learned imitation policy reflects the operator’s tactile and force perception under varying external forces, allowing the collaborative robot to reproduce stable and generalized motions even in tasks requiring hybrid position–force control. The operator manipulates a tendon-driven Master Arm to intuitively demonstrate motions for the Slave Arm, while receiving real-time force feedback during task execution. The Master Arm is designed with low friction and low inertia to ensure precise human manipulation, while the Slave Arm tracks target Cartesian positions in real time. Furthermore, the proposed control algorithm was validated through a Webots-based physics simulator, and the same framework was applied to a real robotic system to experimentally verify the force-feedback characteristics and learning stability.
This study presents a novel imitation learning–based robot teaching system that integrates position and force information, contributing to the development of intuitive and efficient teaching frameworks for collaborative robots. Ultimately, the results of this research are expected to serve as a foundational technology for implementing robotic manipulation intelligence in unstructured and dynamic environments.
