Formaldehyde (FA) is a fundamental chemical widely used across various industrial sectors, including wood processing, synthetic resin and adhesive manufacturing, medical and laboratory reagents, and semiconductor fabrication. However, gaseous FA can cause irritation to the respiratory system, skin, and nervous system even at low concentrations, and long-term exposure has been reported to be associated with carcinogenic risks. Consequently, FA is classified as a key target substance for monitoring in occupational environments and indoor air quality management. In response to these toxicological concerns, the demand for portable sensing technologies capable of rapidly and intuitively assessing FA concentrations has been steadily increasing. Recently, paper-based colorimetric sensors have attracted significant attention as next-generation point-of-use diagnostic platforms due to their low cost, lightweight nature, disposability, and compatibility with printing-based fabrication processes. The intrinsic microfibrous network of paper enables capillary-driven transport without external pumps, while printed pattern designs allow active control of reaction zones and diffusion pathways, making paper an effective substrate for detecting highly reactive gases such as formaldehyde.
In this study, a patterned paper-based FA sensing device was fabricated using a commercial inkjet printer, and a reactive ink that exhibits a visible color change upon exposure to FA vapor was applied. Various indicator compositions combining thymol blue (TB) and bromophenol blue (BPB) were systematically prepared (a total of 28 formulations), and their color contrast, response sensitivity, and baseline stability were evaluated to determine the optimal indicator ratio. Furthermore, to investigate the influence of geometric patterning on sensing performance, the ratio of line width to pore size was designed as 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3, and a checker pattern geometry was additionally implemented to maximize the reaction boundary area within the same footprint. Through these approaches, the effects of pattern structure on FA diffusion behavior, reaction interface area, and initial color transition dynamics—quantified using total color difference (TCD or ΔE)—were systematically analyzed. The results demonstrate that significant enhancement of response speed can be achieved solely through morphological optimization of the printed patterns, even with identical chemical compositions.
In parallel, this research also developed an electrochemical glucose sensor platform aimed at non-invasive blood glucose monitoring. Conventional enzyme-based glucose sensors have relied on the same reaction scheme for decades, involving glucose oxidation by glucose oxidase (GOx) to gluconolactone with hydrogen peroxide generation, yet challenges such as signal instability, interference from biological matrices, and limitations in electrode structure design remain. To address these issues, a multilayer electrode system was constructed consisting of an MWCNT–Fe3O4–PEDOT:PSS composite conductive layer, Prussian blue (PB) as a redox mediator, GOx, and a Nafion protective membrane. By optimizing electrode architecture and evaluating electrochemical characteristics, saliva-based signal responses, sensitivity, and reproducibility, the feasibility of a low-cost, low-power portable glucose monitoring system was demonstrated.
Overall, this thesis integratively explores two types of responsive sensor platforms—(1) paper-based colorimetric sensors for formaldehyde detection and (2) non-invasive electrochemical glucose sensors—through distinct yet complementary experimental approaches. By comprehensively applying material composition control, inkjet-based patterning techniques, reaction mechanism analysis, and structural optimization strategies, this study aims to enhance sensitivity, response speed, operational simplicity, and practical usability. The design principles and fabrication methodologies proposed in this work are expected to serve as foundational technologies for future applications in industrial environment monitoring, personalized healthcare, and the development of low-cost portable sensor systems.
