This paper proposes an Extended Engagement Model as a design principle for addressing contextual discontinuities in restricted-access cultural heritage. The research focuses on Buyeo Royal Tomb No. 1, a heritage site where public visitation is restricted for conservation purposes. Such restrictions lead to discontinuities in visitors' spatial experience, historical understanding, and interpretive exploration processes. Although the potential of virtual reality (VR) content has been widely discussed as a means to address these challenges, existing approaches have largely emphasized visual reconstruction and standardized information delivery. As a result, users' processes of comparison, inference, and interpretation remain insufficiently supported.
To overcome these limitations, this study proposes six engagement elements designed to facilitate cyclical exploration-interpretation learning in VR content for restricted-access cultural heritage: Meaningful Immersion, Procedural Task Engagement, Goal-Oriented Cognitive Engagement, Affective Engagement, Meaning-Constructive Interpretive Agency, and Context-Integrated Immersion. These elements are structured along two axes—information exploration-based and information interpretation-based elements—reflecting the process through which user experience expands into a cyclical learning experience. In this model, information exploration and interpretation operate continuously to promote learning and to restore disconnected spatial, historical, and interpretive contexts.
Experimental results from VR content developed based on the proposed model demonstrated significant effects across all six engagement elements. Learning achievement reached mastery criteria, with particularly high performance on interpretation-based items, indicating the formation of in-depth understanding beyond simple observation. Furthermore, correlation analysis revealed direct linkages between exploration and interpretation, reinforcement of the circulation structure through affective engagement, and a transition toward sustained learning engagement. These findings empirically confirm that the Extended Engagement Model functions as an operational principle for restoring spatial, historical, and interpretive contexts within VR environments.
This study is significant in that it theoretically extends the non-linear exploration-interpretation circulation structure of VR-based cultural heritage learning, which has not been sufficiently addressed in existing engagement research, and empirically validates its effectiveness through experimentation. By presenting concrete design principles for restoring disconnected contexts in restricted-access cultural heritage, this research establishes a foundation applicable to both the development of diverse cultural heritage VR content and the expansion of educational accessibility.
