The accelerated pace of daily life and the complexity of modern cities increase psychological fatigue, highlighting the growing need for spaces that offer emotional stability and healing beyond mere physical shelter. This study proposes a Retreat Residence where individuals can step away from the mundane to engage in self-reflection and experience true rest. To achieve this, Christopher Alexander’s ‘A Pattern Language’ is applied to establish an intuitive harmony between humans and their environment, creating a setting where users feel instinctively secure. This approach views space not as a static backdrop, but as an active element that awakens the senses and directly influences emotions. Specifically, light is employed as a primary medium to foster a profound emotional exchange between the space and its occupants.
While physical structures are fixed and static, light—changing with the passage of time—breathes life into a space, constantly renewing its atmosphere as if conversing with the user. Beyond mere visual effects, light functions as a psychological device that breathes alongside the user's emotions. The specific implementation of this vision, through the selection of core patterns, is as follows:
First, the design was materialized by embracing the unique context of the site. The organic flow of Dumulmeori was reinterpreted into an architectural promenade, guiding users naturally into the depths of the space. During this process, the principles of Pattern Language were applied to ensure a layout where the physical environment and nature coexist in harmony.
Second, the interior spaces were characterized by patterns such as "Light on Two Sides of Every Room" and "Indoor Sunlight" according to the user's stay experience. In contrast, public areas—including the lobby, meditation hall, and conference room—utilize louvers and structural elements to manifest a "Tapestry of Light and Dark." These movements of light provide a visual rhythm for users moving through the space, serving as a crucial element in breaking monotony.
Third, the connection with nature was maximized through a flexible spatial composition that blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior. By introducing concepts like "Sunny Place" and "Outdoor Room," indoor spaces flow naturally into external decks and promenades. This allows users to fully perceive the changing seasons and time within the interior, transcending physical walls.
Consequently, this plan is designed to provide an experience of light from the moment of entry, offering psychological stability and sensory expansion. Beyond constructing artificial forms, it fills the space with the natural language of light and shadow. In doing so, it presents the potential for a space to serve as an emotional sanctuary where users can look deep within themselves and find healing. It is hoped that this Retreat Residence—where the enduring solidity of the structure meets the fluid, ever-changing nature of light—will offer profound comfort and convey the value of sustainable rest to its users.
