    (Abstract)
This study aims to provide foundational data for Myanmar learners of Korean by conducting a contrastive analysis of compound nouns in Korean and Burmese. While both languages are agglutinative and share certain syntactic features such as SOV word order and the use of grammatical particles, significant differences arise due to their distinct genealogical classifications—Korean belongs to the Altaic language family, whereas Burmese is part of the Sino-Tibetan family. These typological distinctions result in varied morphological and syntactic behaviors in compound noun formation.
The research analyzes the composition of compound nouns in both languages in terms of parts of speech, semantic relationships, and structural characteristics. Korean compound nouns are classified into syntactic and non-syntactic types, encompassing combinations such as Noun+Noun, Adjective+Noun, and Verb+Noun (in various inflected forms). In contrast, Burmese allows a wider variety of combinations, including extended structures like Noun+Verb+Noun and Adjective+Adjective+Verb, without morphological changes or phonological transformations.
Semantically, both languages categorize compound nouns into subordinate, coordinate, and fused types. However, differences are observed in allowable structures—Burmese permits both “modifier + head” and “head + modifier” patterns, unlike Korean, which primarily follows a “modifier + head” structure. Additionally, Burmese exhibits greater flexibility in compound formation by permitting repetitive and multi-layered combinations.
Structurally, both Korean and Burmese compound nouns exhibit fixed word order, inseparability of internal elements, and constraints in external modification. Nevertheless, Korean compound nouns often undergo phonological changes and morphological derivations, features largely absent in Burmese.
The findings of this study can enhance the teaching of Korean compound nouns to Burmese-speaking learners by offering targeted linguistic comparisons. It suggests the need for explicit contrastive instruction, error-based feedback, and the use of visual and contextualized learning strategies to bridge the structural and semantic gaps between the two languages.
