The purpose of this study is to develop an obesity management sports course, and investigate the effectiveness of this course in promoting health among obese college students. To achieve this purpose, first basic framework of the obesity management sports course was determined through literature review, logical analysis, and expert interviews. Next, a teaching plan was developed based on the course framework. 45 obese students (26 males and 19 females) were recruited from J University in China for a single group teaching experiment, which lasted for 8 weeks. Third, the effectiveness of the course was assessed using a body composition analyzer and the Revised Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP-IIR). The results of this study are divided into two parts. The first part details that the structure of the obesity management sports course developed in this study consists of four elements: course objectives, classroom teaching, extracurricular practice, and course evaluation. The teaching content includes seven knowledge units, four of which are fat-reduction exercise skills and three are theoretical knowledge. The second part highlights the effectiveness of the course, reflected in three main aspects. Firstly, there were significant reductions in physiological indicators such as body weight, body mass index, body fat, and waist-to-hip ratio compared to the baseline. Secondly, the course promoted the development of a healthy lifestyle among students, including dietary nutrition, health responsibility, physical exercise, stress management, and spiritual growth. Thirdly, the students expressed high satisfaction with this course and talked about its practicality for them. The research results indicate that offering an obesity management sports course in Chinese universities can effectively improve the health problems of obese college students and promote the formation of a healthy lifestyle. These results confirm the necessity and effectiveness of applying obesity management sports courses in Chinese universities, providing more targeted course options for obese students.
