This study aimed to investigate the influence mechanism of the project-based learning model on students' learning engagement in Chinese college English writing courses, as well as the mediating roles of learning motivation and teacher-student interaction. As higher education reforms continue to advance, addressing the challenge of enhancing students' classroom engagement has become increasingly significant. The influence mechanism of the project-based learning model on learning engagement, as an innovative teaching approach, warrants further investigation. The study employed a questionnaire-based survey to collect data from 589 students who participated in English writing courses using the project-based learning model at Changchun Institute of Electronic Technology. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, reliability and validity tests, correlation analysis, and structural equation modeling. The study addressed the following seven research questions: First, was there a positive correlation between the project-based learning model and learning engagement? Second, was there a positive correlation between the project-based learning model and learning motivation? Third, was there a positive correlation between the project-based learning model and teacher-student interaction? Fourth, was there a positive correlation between teacher-student interaction and learning engagement? Fifth, was there a positive correlation between learning motivation and learning engagement? Sixth, did teacher-student interaction play a mediating role between the project-based learning model and learning engagement? Seventh, did learning motivation play a mediating role between the project-based learning model and learning engagement? The findings revealed that: First, the project-based learning model had a significant positive impact on learning engagement. Second, the Project-based Learning Model had a significant positive impact on teacher-student interaction. Third, the project-based learning model had a significant positive impact on learning motivation. Fourth, teacher-student interaction had a significant positive impact on learning engagement. Fifth, learning motivation had a significant positive impact on learning engagement. Sixth, teacher-student interaction played a partial mediating role between the project-based learning model and learning engagement. Seventh, learning motivation played a partial mediating role between the project-based learning model and learning engagement. This study not only contributes to the theoretical understanding of the project-based learning model but also offers practical implications for teaching reform in Chinese college English writing courses. The findings suggest that universities should prioritize fostering positive teacher-student interactions and enhancing students' learning motivation when implementing the project-based learning Model to more effectively promote students' learning engagement.
