The purpose of this study was to empirically examine the impact of self-directed learning and career beliefs on major satisfaction of design major university students, as well as the mediating role of career decision self-efficacy. To this end, this study conducted a theoretical investigation of the research variables, elucidated the relationships and mediating effects among the variables, and established a research model. Based on the hypothesis testing of the research model, a questionnaire survey was conducted among undergraduate students majoring in design (including Visual Communication Design, Environmental Design, Drama and Film Art Design, and Digital Media Art) from freshman to senior years at five four-year universities' art universitiess in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China. The 715 valid data collected were meticulously analyzed, and regression analysis was used to confirm the relationships and mediating influences among the variables, resulting in the following findings. First, self-directed learning had a significant positive effect on major satisfaction of design major university students. Second, career beliefs had a significant positive effect on major satisfaction of design major university students. Third, career decision self-efficacy had a significant positive effect on major satisfaction of design major university students. Fourth, self-directed learning had a significant positive effect on career decision self-efficacy of design major university students. Fifth, career beliefs had a significant positive effect on career decision self-efficacy of design major university students. Sixth, career decision self-efficacy mediated the relationship between self-directed learning and major satisfaction of design major university students. Seventh, career decision self-efficacy mediated the relationship between career beliefs and major satisfaction of design major university students. The results of this study will provide valuable insights in exploring the self-directed learning, career beliefs, career decision self-efficacy, and major satisfaction of design major university students. It is hoped that the results of this study can be more widely applied to research on design major university students, provide targeted guidance to relevant practitioners, and provide more valuable data support for research in this area.
