This study explores instructional design directions for applying play as a core medium of
teaching and learning in Korean language classes for preschool learners in overseas Korea
Heritage schools. To this end, the study combined an analysis of domestic and
international Korean textbooks for young children with an online survey of Korea Heritage
school teachers. The findings indicate that the textbooks tend to be biased toward
letter-knowledge–centered activities, while teachers generally perceive a high need for
play-based lessons but identify lack of materials, preparation burden, and time–space
constraints as major difficulties. In response, this study proposes instructional strategies that
reflect the limited classroom conditions of Korea Heritage schools, including (1) Integrating
language goals with play-based extensions, (2) Redesigning small-scale physical and
interactive play activities, (3) Implementing integrated play using cultural materials, and (4)
Strengthening teacher support systems through practical guides and tailored training. In
addition, the study organizes four play types—(1) Manipulative play, (2) Language play, (3)
Media play, and (4) Interaction play—and summarizes their application principles to present
a reference framework and develop instructional plans for preschool Korean classes in
overseas Korea Heritage schools.
