    ABSTRACT

The Holiness and Violence of the Levites

: An Interpretation from the Perspective of Analytical Psychology

This study investigates the phenomenon of the coexistence of violence and holiness in the Old Testament texts concerning the Levites, elucidating how such polarity is symbolized and transformed into meaningful significance. Previous research has primarily discussed the violence of the Levites—such as the massacre at Shechem (Gen 34), the golden calf incident (Exod 32), Phinehas's violence (Num 25), and the Levite's concubine episode (Judg 19)— and their ritual roles, including temple service, Torah instruction, and blessing, in isolation. However, a comprehensive analysis of how this ambivalence is integrated and reconfigured within the same individual and collective identity, and how violence and holiness form a single symbolic system within a deeper psychological structure, has been insufficient. To address this gap, this study aims to interpret the duality of the Levites as reflected in the unconscious and symbolic structures of the Israelite community.
The research methods are as follows: First, a limited historical-critical and literary-critical exegesis was conducted on texts from Genesis to Nehemiah that reveal the duality of the Levites, analyzing the aspects of violence and holiness manifested in each text. Second, adopting Carl G. Jung's analytical psychology as the hermeneutical framework, the study reinterprets the duality of the Levites using concepts such as the collective unconscious, archetypes, shadow and projection, persona and Self, the union of opposites and the transcendent function, numinous experience, and particularly the transformation of libido. Third, synthesizing these analyses, this study proposes a ‘symbolic-transformation approach’ as an analytical framework to interpret how oppositional elements such as violence-holiness are symbolically constructed and transformed within ritual forms, including ritual, purity, boundary maintenance, and blessing. This approach views violence and holiness not as contradictions but as a process in which the oppositional tensions experienced by the community are mediated, integrated, and restructured into order through symbols and rituals. Furthermore, by interpreting this transformation process as the formation of the Self at individual and collective levels, the study seeks to elucidate that violence and holiness represent a dynamic progression toward wholeness through the union of opposites.
The results of the textual analysis are as follows. First, the massacre at Shechem (Gen 34) depicts the repressed anger and inferiority complex of the individual Levi projected onto an external other, erupting into collective violence, revealing the expansion of Levite violence on a collective scale and the archetypal projection structure of the shadow.
Second, the life of Moses, described as a descendant of Levi, presents the possibility of individuation through the transformation from murder to a calling via a theophany (numinous experience), the giving of the law, and his role as mediator, integrating violent energy into awareness and order. This forms a narrative foundation exemplifying the symbolic transformation structure of the Levites.
Third, the golden calf incident (Exod 32) serves as a pivotal turning point where the Levites' violent loyalty is transformed into a collective ritual act that purifies chaos and reconstructs order. This demonstrates an archetypal purification structure in which the community's unconscious dangers are ritualized to form conscious order.
Fourth, the text on the redemption of the firstborn in Numbers (Num 3) represents a stage where violence that takes life is reconfigured as a symbol of dedicating life. This reveals a point of collective integration where destructive energy is sublimated within ritual and institutional order.
Fifth, the Phinehas incident (Num 25) depicts the potential energy of institutionalized violence being reactivated in the form of practical purification amid community crisis. Here, the moment is revealed where repressed libido penetrates the realm of consciousness and is transformed into symbols of purification and salvation.
Sixth, Deuteronomy (Deut 10, 18, 33) presents the reconfiguration of Levite duties into sacrifice, Torah instruction, and blessing, showing how violent energy is internalized and stably integrated into forms of education and liturgy rather than external eruptions.
Seventh, the Nehemiah texts (Neh 7, 13) imply a collective transcendent function through the Levites' boundary-maintenance role, whereby the post-exilic community controls external threats and internal anxieties, transforming the repressed shadow into a new symbolic order.
Through such analyses, this study locates the meaning of the coexistence of violence and holiness in the Levite texts within the process by which the oppositional structures in the unconscious, as reflected in the Israelite community, are integrated through symbolic transformation. Human primordial violence, when repressed, returns in other forms of violence or compulsion. However, when undergoing the transformation of libido within symbols and rituals, it can be sublimated into new religious and ethical forms such as purity, ritual, education, and boundary maintenance. Thereby, the Levites function as a symbolic locus where shadow and holiness meet in the memory of the Israelite community. They can be understood as a representative group mediating the polarity of violence and holiness in the formation process of Israel's ‘collective Self.’
This study reinterprets the duality of the Levites from the perspective of analytical psychology. It supplements the existing discussions centered on historical criticism and proposes a symbolic-transformation approach that allows reading biblical texts on violence not as destructive dilemmas but as dynamics of psychological integration and individuation. This approach is not limited to Levite texts but presents the potential to expand into a general methodology for interpreting oppositional structures such as violence-holiness, judgment-mercy, and purity-impurity throughout the Old Testament.
