This thesis explores the application of Edward T. Hall’s proxemics theory to the worship space to vitalize youth ministry in small churches in Korea. Contemporary youth, characterized as digital natives, have new expectations regarding relationships, communication, participation, and spatial experience. However, many small churches face difficulties in youth ministry due to uniformly and inefficiently designed worship spaces.
This study examines the psychological and faith development characteristics of adolescence and analyzes the historical transformation and theological meaning of Christian worship spaces. In particular, based on the characteristics of the MZ Generation and adolescent developmental psychology theories (such as Erikson and Piaget), this study reveals the need for spatial environments that support communication, intimacy, and the formation of self-identity.
The research methods included multifaceted literature review, analysis of existing church space cases, and examination of the applicability of spatial theories (social centrifugal/centripetal space and the four distances in proxemics). In this process, the merits and limitations of spaces actually used by youth groups and cases of psychological distance and group interactions experienced by youths were explored in depth.
In conclusion, it is proposed that small church youth worship spaces need to be redesigned to induce 'relational intimacy' and 'participatory worship.' For this, specific design alternatives such as flexible seating, adaptable group meeting spaces, indirect lighting, use of digital media, and lounge-type arrangements that foster intimacy are suggested. This is an attempt to simultaneously realize the theological essence of worship (meeting with God and community) while reflecting the identity, sense of belonging, and interaction needs of youth.
The significance of this thesis lies in presenting a new direction for the design of youth worship spaces in small churches that aligns with changing times and generational characteristics by combining empirical research and theoretical analysis.
