This study examines, from a whole-person perspective, the contemporary mental-health crisis in which rising depression, anxiety, and social isolation converge with the loss of meaning and the collapse of relationships. It aims to reconceptualize and propose ‘numinose’—an experience arising from an encounter with transcendent presence—as a potential key resource for recovery. To this end, drawing on literature review, conceptual analysis, and prior research, the study (1) critically examines the limits of prevailing mental-health discourses and social responses, and (2) interprets Carl Jung’s psychological account of numinose and (3) compares and contrasts it with a perichoretic understanding of numinous grounded in Trinitarian and soteriological theology, thereby seeking to formulate a conceptual framework of “relational transcendence–immanence” for mental health.
Chapter II first identifies that, despite the expansion of treatment, welfare, and prevention systems, the contemporary mental-health crisis has not sufficiently addressed the deficit of spiritual meaning. It then presents, as a task of recovery, the restoration of the God–human relationship on the basis of a whole-person understanding of the human person, and proposes numinose as a relational encounter with God within that restored connection.
Chapter III interprets Jung’s psychological numinose in terms of a structure of “monistic transcendence–psychological immanence,” in which transcendence and immanence are shared as one essence. This approach offers significant insights by challenging modern dualism and elucidating the relationship between religious symbols and mental health. However, because it ultimately understands transcendence within the framework of psychological structures, it is also discussed as having certain limitations in sufficiently securing soteriological relationality and the personality-wise's otherness of a transcendent Other.
Chapter IV presents perichōrēsis as the mode of Trinitarian being and as an ontological framework for explaining the God–human relationship, and conceptualizes it as perichoretic numinose characterized by “a personality-wise's transcendent Other–indwelling immanence.” This account of numinose suggests a theoretical possibility for reconstructing mental-health recovery beyond the level of psychological balance—namely, as the restoration of a relational identity as one who is “beloved,” formed within relationship with God. It also gives clarifying criteria that more distinctly differentiate psychological recovery from existential and soteriological recovery in employing Jungian insights into Christian counseling
In conclusion, this study reconfigures mental-health recovery within an existential category of “relational reconnection with God,” critically reviews Jung’s insights, and explores the possibility of a theological healing model grounded in perichoretic theology. It provides a theoretical basis for pastoral counseling, spiritual formation, and practices of communal care, while indicating future tasks such as empirical research in clinical and pastoral settings and the development of evaluative instruments.
