(PPP)Ni-L (L = OR, OAr, SAr or NAr2)

Unlike conventional transition metal complexes that react mainly at the metal center, metal–ligand cooperativity (MLC) involves both metal and ligand in activating or promoting chemical reactions. These reactions necessarily go through electron, proton or group transfer from the ligand to metal center. Similarly, metal–metal cooperativity (MMC) observed at the active sites of several metalloenzymes with multiple metal centers which work together by sharing electronic roles or binding substrates spatially to activate chemical bonds. This kind of cooperative interactions provide a wide-range reaction compared to mononuclear systems. Chapter 1 introduces studies on MLC in transition metal complexes bearing phosphorus-based ligands. The examples on [NiFe] bimetallic complexes related to carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH) which focus on MMC is also presented. Chapter 2 and 3 explore the activation of small molecules through nickel or cobalt complexes supported by a pincer-type PPP ligand (PPP⁻ = –P[2-PiPr₂C₆H₄]₂) via MLC. Chapter 4 and 5 describe synthetic approaches that aim to understand MMC reactivity at the bimetallic active sites of CODH.
In Chapter 2, the electronic effect of an MLC group transfer is discussed upon introduction of CO to mononuclear nickel complexes supported by a PPP ligand. A (PPP)Ni–L system (L = OR, OAr, SAr, or NAr2) presents a unique two-electron transfer with π-acidic ligands L’ to generate Ni0–L’. The study examined electronic effects by introducing para-substituted aryl oxides to (PPP)NiII(OAr) complexes. Structural conversion into Ni0–CO can occur reversibly under vacuum and heating condition. Moreover, comparison of crystal structures and UV-Vis kinetics reveals that higher electron deficient phenolates weaken the Ni–OAr bond thereby increasing the carbonylation rate of Ni–OAr. Consequently, experimental results and DFT analysis support a closed-shell CO associative nucleophlic pathway in the MLC-type transformation.
In Chapter 3, nitrene group transfer of phosphazido cobalt complexes synthesized from (PPP)Co species are introduced. Previously reported (PPP)CoBr dimers have a phosphorus center which possess a radical character and form a P–P bond. This P–P bonds easily break even at room temperature to monomers which can form as P⁻–CoII or P•–CoI through one-electron transfer between P and Co. The reaction of these CoII bromide complexes with organic azides produces 5-membered metalacyclic phosphazido cobalt complexes. Under photolysis, the resulting phosphazido cobalt complexes generate α-position nitrenes that transfer to various ligands. However, after one-electron reduction and binding of a Lewis acid to the phosphazido moiety, benzyl phosphazido CoI complexes show different position selectivity in nitrene activation upon thermolysis. Notably, methylation at the Nγ position leads to γ-nitrene transfer to acetonitrile, generating N-phospha-N’-methyl acetamidine (–N=CMe–NMe–). This represents the first example of γ-nitrene group transfer from an organic azide.
In Chapter 4, the reactivity of mononuclear nickel(0) complexes with CO2 was compared depending on the ligand framework. Ni0–CO complexes bearing amide-based pincer ligands, such as PNP (PNP = N[2-PiPr2-4-Me-C6H3]2) and acriPNP (acriPNP = bis(diisopropylphosphino)-2,7,9,9-tetramethyl-9,10-dihydroacridine), react with CO2 to form Ni(II) carboxylate complexes. However, the (PPMeP)Ni(CO) complex, supported by the phosphine-centered pincer ligand PPMeP (PPMeP = Me[2-PiPr2-C6H4]2), did not react with CO2 even at elevated temperatures. DFT calculations predicted the reaction between (PPMeP)Ni(CO) and CO2 to be thermodynamically unfavorable than the others. SC–XRD sturctural analysis suggests that nickel complexes with the amide-based ligands possess relatively more open active sites, which allow distortion of the Ni–CO bond and enhance reactivity compared to (PPMeP)Ni(CO). Additionally, the reaction of (PPMeP)Ni(CO) with dioxygen led to the formation of nickel carbonate species.
In Chapter 5, the synthesis of a tethered bimetallic complex containing Ni0 and FeII sites and its application to small molecule activation was introduced. A ligand was designed with two chelating sites of differing basicity to allow incorporation of two metals with distinct properties. Reaction with Ni(cod)2 and CO gave a Ni–CO complex, followed by introduction of Fe to form the Ni0/FeII heterobimetallic species. Spectroscopic analysis including Mössbauer and Infrared spectroscopy, confirmed the oxidation states as Ni0 and FeII. This complex represents the first crystallographically characterized example of a tethered Ni0/FeII heterobimetallic species.
