Ammonia (NH3) is a vital chemical feedstock and carbon-free energy carrier, but its conventional synthesis via the Haber–Bosch process is highly energy-intensive, consuming roughly 1–2% of the world’s total energy and emitting about 2% of global CO2.
Over 180 million tons of NH3 are produced annually, primarily for fertilizers, and NH3 is increasingly seen as a sustainable energy vector for hydrogen storage. This environmental impact drives the pursuit of greener ammonia production under ambient conditions. The electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (e-NRR), which reduces N2 (triple-bond dissociation energy: 941 kJ mol-1) to NH3 at mild temperatures and pressures, is being actively explored as an eco-friendly alternative to Haber–Bosch. However, e-NRR remains extremely challenging due to the inertness of N2 and the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), resulting in very low NH3 yields and Faradaic efficiencies. Overcoming these obstacles requires advanced catalysts that can selectively bind and activate N2, as well as deeper insight into catalytic mechanisms to guide rational design.
This dissertation investigates the rational design of electrocatalysts for the electrochemical synthesis of ammonia which focuses on three strategies: (1) enhancing N2 adsorption and active surface area through surface modification, (2) promoting N2 activation by tuning the electronic structure of the metal centers, and (3) facilitating N2 activation via the formation of sulfur vacancies, accompanied by the development of an in situ method for real-time ammonia detection.
Chapter 1 outlines the global rise in environmental concerns, particularly the increase in atmospheric temperature due to greenhouse gas emissions. In response, extensive research efforts have been directed toward the development of eco-friendly energy technologies that can replace fossil fuels. This chapter emphasizes the need for alternative, sustainable ammonia production pathways, highlighting the e-NRR as a promising ambient method with the potential to mitigate the environmental impact of conventional processes.
In chapter 2, copper sulfide (CuS) was investigated as a catalyst for e-NRR. Hollow CuS spheres were synthesized via a facile antisolvent crystallization method, to reach high-surface-area hollow nanostructures. These CuS hollow spheres were then modified with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) through galvanic replacement to form Au NPs–CuS composite catalysts. The addition of Au NPs regulated the N2 adsorption strength and expanded the active surface area, leading to enhanced NRR performance. The Au NPs–CuS catalyst with a moderate Cu:Au ratio exhibited the highest NH3 yield, likely due to the optimized balance between N2 adsorption strength and the increased density of catalytically active sites.
In chapter 3, copper doped vanadium sulfide catalysts (Cu:VSx) were designed to tune the vanadium oxidation state and defect structure. These V2+-rich materials exhibited higher e-NRR activity, which is attributed to a π-backbonding mechanism wherein V2+ sites donate electron density into adsorbed N2, weakening the N≡N bond and facilitating its activation. Thus, the combination of an electron-rich V surface and abundant S vacancies synergistically lowers the barriers for N2 reduction, indicating the higher N2 activity than un doped VSx (V4+ rich). Subsequently, other 3d transition metal sulfides also exhibited enhanced NRR activity when the host metal possessed more unpaired electrons, suggesting that a π-backbonding mechanism similar to that in VSₓ is operative in these systems as well.
In chapter 4, a broader design principle was proposed that late-transition-metal sulfides with weaker metal–sulfur bonds can more easily generate sulfur vacancies, thereby creating more active sites for N2 activation. To test this hypothesis, CuS, Ag2S, and Au2S (group 11 metal sulfides) were comparatively evaluated. Consistent with expectations, silver sulfide (Ag2S), with its relatively weak Ag–S bond, showed the highest NH3 yield, presumably due to the formation of sulfur vacancies that facilitate N2 adsorption. By contrast, other metal sulfides, which have stronger M–S bonds, exhibited lower NRR activity but greater structural stability. The observed activity trend correlated with the relative metal–sulfur bond strengths and vacancy formation propensities of these materials. Notably, Ag2S suffered rapid deactivation as the active sulfide phase was converted to metallic Ag or lost lattice sulfur under reaction conditions. Thereafter, regeneration procedure (re-sulfidation of the deactivated catalyst) was implemented to restore the Ag2S phase and recover its activity. This comparison revealed a clear trade-off: while weaker M–S bonding promotes more active vacancies and higher initial NRR rates, excessively weak bonding can easily decompose the catalyst.
Finally, to improve the reliability of NH3 detection, advanced in situ analytical techniques were developed. Conventional ex situ NH3 quantification (e.g., colorimetry or ion-selective electrodes) is prone to contamination and provides only time-averaged results, which can mask transient catalytic behavior. In contrast, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) can employed as an in situ, real-time tool to monitor NH3 production. This SECM approach enabled direct observation of catalyst activity and deactivation with spatial and temporal resolution. Notably, this work demonstrates SECM-based NH3 detection as an effective operando methodology for evaluating NRR catalysts, overcoming the limitations of bulk measurements and ensuring that performance metrics are accurate.
In summary, electronic modulation of active sites in metal sulfides has been shown to significantly impact N2 reduction catalysis. Through strategies including (i) compositional doping, (ii) electronic structure tuning, and (iii) sulfur vacancy engineering, critical parameters controlling N2 adsorption and activation have been identified. Moreover, the integration of SECM as a real-time analytical platform provides a paradigm for rigorously evaluating catalyst performance.
The catalyst design approaches and characterization techniques presented in this dissertation offer insights into improving the efficiency of electrochemical systems for ammonia production, and may inform future strategies toward carbon-neutral nitrogen fixation.
