In the development of next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), understanding the behavior of multi-component cathode slurries and ionic liquid electrolytes at the molecular level is crucial for optimizing performance and manufacturability. This thesis is divided into two major parts: the first investigates the phase behavior and miscibility of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based cathode slurries, and the second evaluates ionic liquid electrolytes using machine learning force fields (MLFFs).
In the first part, all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to study the crystallization behavior and miscibility of PVDF in binary and multicomponent slurry systems with solvents, N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and dimethylformamide (DMF), dispersants hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) with varying acrylonitrile (ACN) content, and conductive additives (CNTs, graphene). The study reveals critical concentrations at which PVDF transitions between amorphous, semi-crystalline, and crystalline states, and highlights the role of solvent structure and HNBR composition in governing these transitions. Solubility parameter analysis, radial distribution functions, and β-phase quantification show that moderate ACN content in HNBR enhances miscibility with PVDF while maintaining effective dispersion of conductive agents.
The second part focuses on the application of MLFFs for simulating ionic liquid (IL) electrolytes such as PYR14BF4 and LiTFSI/PYR14TFSI. MLFFs generated using deep neural networks (DPMD) and graph neural networks (MACE) are validated against density functional theory (DFT) and classical force fields, with MACE providing superior performance in structural and dynamical predictions. Detailed evaluations, including diffusion coefficients, Li cluster analysis, and molecular conformation distributions, demonstrate that MACE-trained models can reproduce experimental hand high-level theoretical results with high accuracy. These findings highlight the promise of MLFF-based MD as a next-generation simulation frame work for complex electrolyte systems.
Overall, this thesis provides theoretical insights and computational methodologies for improving the understanding of multicomponent LIB materials. The results not only provide deeper insight into the design of cathode slurries and electrolytes but also point to the potential of ML-driven simulations in guiding future battery development.
