Two-dimensional (2D) materials, particularly graphene, have attracted significant interest due to their unique structural, electrical, and chemical properties. Among various surface modification approaches, fluorination via xenon difluoride (XeF₂) offers a dry, low-temperature, and controllable route for tuning the characteristics of 2D materials. This dissertation presents a comprehensive investigation into XeF₂-based fluorination strategies for engineering graphene and related 2D materials toward electronic and environmental applications.
Chapter 2 systematically investigates the fluorination and etching mechanisms of 2D materials, with a focus on the role of silicon during XeF₂ exposure. Through a combination of experimental analysis and computational modeling, it is demonstrated that reactive XeF intermediates formed in the presence of silicon serve as key species for enhancing the fluorination of graphene and the etching of hexagonal boron nitride. This mechanistic understanding addresses prior inconsistencies in the literature and enables more reliable and reproducible surface modification of 2D materials.
Chapter 3 presents a vertical device integration strategy using fluorinated graphene (FG) as both a structural and conductive component. By integrating one-dimensional (1D) edge contacts with XeF₂-treated FG interfaces, robust multi-level via connections are achieved within van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures. This architecture enables the fabrication of a complementary inverter composed entirely of 2D materials, exhibiting low contact resistance, high voltage gain, and stable AC operation. These results demonstrate the viability of FG-based via contacts for three-dimensional (3D) integration of 2D electronic devices.
Chapter 4 introduces a scalable method for fabricating nanoporous membranes from graphene and graphene oxide (GO) via XeF₂-driven pore formation. In graphene, nanometer-scale pores are created through thermally activated carbon desorption at fluorinated sites. In GO, the presence of epoxy groups enables pore formation at room temperature through localized strain accumulation. The resulting nanoporous GO membranes exhibit high hydrogen selectivity and gas separation performance comparable to advanced porous graphene membranes, while maintaining compatibility with room-temperature and large-area processing.
Collectively, this dissertation establishes XeF₂ fluorination as a versatile platform for chemical functionalization, device integration, and membrane engineering in 2D material systems. The findings provide mechanistic insights and practical strategies for harnessing XeF₂ chemistry in the development of scalable technologies for electronics, sensing, and environmental applications.
