Bacterial Cellulose (BC) is characterized by its one-dimensional nanofibrous structure and highly interconnected nanoporous network. With high purity, excellent mechanical strength, superior biocompatibility, and notable water retention, BC has been widely utilized in biomedical materials, polymer composites, and energy storage systems. In this study, we used nata de coco, a form of Bacterial Cellulose commercially available as a food product, to develop functional nanocomposites for photothermal therapy and solid-state polymer electrolytes. First, BC was processed into an injectable form, and Prussian Blue nanoparticles (PB NPs) were synthesized on its surface to fabricate a nanocomposite. This composite was administered via peritumoral injection and applied in photothermal therapy, exhibiting high therapeutic efficacy with significantly reduced cytotoxicity and improved biostability compared to bare PB NPs. Second, the BC surface was coated with silica (SiO₂) and combined with polyethylene oxide (PEO) to construct a composite solid polymer electrolyte. This hybrid electrolyte showed enhanced mechanical strength, thermal stability, and effective suppression of lithium dendrite growth compared to pristine PEO, leading to long-term cycling stability and improved electrochemical performance in lithium metal batteries. Overall, this study presents a cost-effective and eco-friendly strategy for developing high-performance BC-based materials for biomedical and energy storage applications.
