Polymers, by virtue of their inherent flexibility and stretchability, serve as a bridge between rigid robotic systems and soft living organisms. Recently, the role of polymers in material systems has evolved. Instead of serving only as passive bridging matrices, polymers are now engineered into functional forms whose designed molecular motifs allow them to respond to external stimuli. Stimuli-responsive polymers should rely on specific molecular structures to react to defined stimuli, which inherently limits the diversity of material designs. To handle this limitation, nanoparticles have been introduced as a complementary component to expand polymer functionality without affecting mother material’s property. Prior strategies have largely focused on either enhancing the intrinsic function of polymers through nanoparticle incorporation or showcasing independent functions from both constituents within a hybrid composite. However, these combinations often remain confined to the original capabilities of each material, resulting in limited performance and restricted adaptability in polymer–based devices.
To overcome this limitation, this dissertation proposes a new design paradigm: the creation of synergistic functionalities through the co-engineering of interaction between polymers and nanoparticles, moving beyond a simple additive combination of existing properties. Rather than relying solely on specific molecular structures that respond to defined stimuli, I explore emergent macroscopic behaviors arising from polymers in transitional states. These behaviors are then combined with engineered nanoparticles to unlock new classes of hybrid functionalities.
In Chapter 2, I exploit polymer growth behavior during photo-induced polymerization and integrate it with nanoparticle superlattices to achieve tunable and fixable structural coloration. This system allows light-driven modulation of color through precise control of interparticle spacing and enables color fixation via oxygen-mediated polymer quenching, realizing a practical, full-spectrum, mono-ink platform.
In Chapter 3, I developed a hybrid material that couples the reversible phase transition of gelatin-based polymers (between sol and gel states) with magnetically responsive nanoparticles. This material can alternate between a soft, elastic solid and a fluidic, magneto-reconfigurable conductor, enabling reconfigurable electrodes for dielectric elastomer actuators.
Collectively, this dissertation expands the functional design space of soft materials by harnessing the dynamic interplay between polymers and nanoparticles. It demonstrates that polymeric functions need not be limited to static chemical structures but can emerge from transitional physical states and interfacial interactions, opening new avenues for programmable, multifunctional soft devices. I also believe that devices built entirely from polymer materials, which constitute much of the human body, will lay the groundwork for moving beyond today’s rigid, static devices toward systems that more closely resemble humans.
