The growing demand for electric vehicles and energy storage systems has intensified the need for high-energy-density battery technologies. Li metal batteries have gained considerable attention as a promising next-generation energy storage system, owing to their exceptionally high theoretical capacity, low redox potential, and superior energy density compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries. Among them, anode-free lithium metal batteries offer a streamlined fabrication process and maximize energy density by eliminating excess lithium metal, making them attractive for practical applications. However, the commercialization of anode-free lithium metal batteries remains challenging due to uncontrollable lithium deposition, which leads to dendritic lithium growth, electrolyte depletion, and continuous consumption of active material. Dendritic structures can cause internal short circuits during cycling, produce electrochemically inactive “dead lithium,” and generate non-uniform current distribution, resulting in high overpotentials and unstable plating/stripping behavior. Therefore, achieving uniform lithium morphology through a fundamental understanding of lithium deposition mechanisms is critical for the realization of stable anode-free lithium metal batteries. This study aims to elucidate lithium deposition behavior based on substrate lithiophilicity through the lens of electron transfer kinetics, and to identify the necessary conditions for dendrite-free and uniform lithium growth. In the first chapter, we investigated electron transfer behavior on lithiophilic substrates. Lithiophilic materials are generally known to reduce nucleation overpotential and promote uniform lithium deposition via strong binding to Li+ ions. Interestingly, we observed that at high current densities, lithium plating on gold-sputtered copper was inhibited compared to bare copper. This counterintuitive behavior was rationalized using the Marcus–Hush–Chidsey (MHC) theory, which revealed that while gold has a lower reorganization energy, copper exhibits a significantly larger pre-exponential factor, leading to enhanced electron transfer under high-overpotential conditions. The applicability of this model was consistent across various substrates and electrolyte environments. In the second part, we examined lithium morphology evolution during the growth phase. Li deposition was found to be governed by the competing rates of (i) nucleation rate on electrode surface, (ii) Li growth rate on deposited Li, and (iii) nucleation rate on deposited Li. When heterogeneous nucleation proceeded rapidly and densely across the substrate, vertically aligned columnar lithium structures were formed. In contrast, spherical or dendritic morphologies emerged when either growth or homogeneous nucleation dominated. These findings demonstrate that rapid and uniform heterogeneous nucleation is a prerequisite for achieving columnar lithium growth and suppressing dendritic formation. This work provides a kinetic framework for understanding lithium deposition processes in anode-free lithium metal batteries and highlights the key factors required to control lithium morphology. The insights gained are expected to contribute to the development of high Coulombic efficiency and dendrite-free lithium metal batteries with enhanced practical viability.
