The instability of lean combustion via spark ignition originates from the stochastic nature of flow around the spark plug and energy transfer processes occurring from spark ignition to flame propagation. Among these, the formation of the initial flame kernel after spark discharge is especially critical in determining whether a combustion cycle succeeds. Thus, to secure ignition stability in lean environments, the energy transfer from the spark channel to the surrounding mixture plays a key role. This energy transfer is influenced by two main factors: the ignition strategy, characterized by the charging signal applied to the ignition coil, and the flow conditions around the spark plug. Accordingly, this dissertation investigates how these variables affect the characteristics of energy transfer through the spark channel and ultimately provides a theoretical prediction of the effectiveness of each ignition strategy depending on the ignition environment, in terms of promoting stable flame kernel development.
First, spark ignition experiments were conducted to analyze how different ignition strategies and flow conditions affect the electrical and geometric properties of the spark channel. The tested ignition strategies—intended to increase spark energy—included extending the charge duration, applying a dual-coil ignition system, and introducing multi-pulse discharges. Two flow conditions with relatively low and high velocities were compared. It was observed that stronger ignition strategies led to higher discharge currents, which in turn increased resistive losses in the ignition circuit rather than energy delivered to the channel. However, higher discharge currents also delayed the occurrence of short-circuits, allowing the spark channel to be maintained at longer lengths. In the case of prolonged charge durations, an optimal point was identified where the benefits of increased channel length outweighed the resistive losses, resulting in a peak in the ratio of spark energy to supply energy. Additionally, the dual-coil system, which can concentrate the spark energy early in the discharge, was less effective under slow-flow conditions due to amplified resistive losses. In contrast, under fast-flow conditions, the dual-coil configuration allowed the spark channel to be sustained at longer lengths, improving both spark energy and power.
Based on these experimental findings, a predictive model was developed to estimate the behavior of the ignition coil and the spark channel under the influence of external flow. A key component of this model is a stochastic sub-model for predicting the timing of short-circuit occurrences. This probability-based model was formulated using experimentally measured spark current and voltage data and was shown to replicate the stochastic energy delivery behavior of the spark channel. Moreover, even when ignition strategies different from those used to derive the function were applied, the function was still able to predict the timing of short-circuit occurrences with notable accuracy compared to actual experimental results.
Using the predictive spark channel model, spark energy profiles corresponding to each ignition strategy were generated. Then, by incorporating theoretical insights into the relationship between ignition energy and flame kernel growth—such as the concept of a critical radius—criteria were established to determine whether a given spark energy profile would result in sustained ignition. Specifically, ignition was predicted to be successful if energy exceeding the minimum ignition energy (MIE) was delivered within a limited time frame, referred to as the quench time. The dependence of MIE and quench time on the ignition environment—represented by equivalence ratio and turbulence intensity—was quantified, enabling predictions of ignition success based on the combination of ignition strategy and operating conditions. Furthermore, the effectiveness of dual-coil and multi-pulse strategies in expanding the ignition-permissible region was evaluated. The dual-coil strategy was particularly effective when the quench time was shorter than the original spark duration, whereas the multi-pulse strategy required the quench time to be significantly longer than the existing spark duration to provide additional energy effectively.
Although the benefits of increasing spark energy for improving ignition stability and expanding the lean-limit have been demonstrated experimentally, this study goes a step further by theoretically explaining how the effectiveness of each ignition strategy varies with the ignition environment. The framework and insights presented in this dissertation are expected to contribute to future developments aimed at improving ignition stability and expanding operable conditions in lean-burn SI engines.
