As reusable launch vehicle technology advances, developing reliable injector systems for launch vehicles and spacecraft has emerged as a key task. In particular, it is essential to develop injector systems that can ensure stable atomization in environments of both negative and positive gravitational acceleration acting on the body during ascent and landing. However, research into the influence of acceleration environments and liquid properties on the atomization process is extremely limited. This study is based on these technical requirements and aims to establish a numerical simulation framework capable of simulating the collision phenomenon between two liquid jets with different physical properties at the scale-resolving level. The study also seeks to investigate the effects of various acceleration conditions and changes in fluid properties on spray and mixing characteristics, both quantitatively and qualitatively.

To this end, this study introduces an incompressible, immiscible gas-liquid-liquid three-phase flow solver that can simulate three-phase flow. This solver incorporates a one-fluid formulation and the Volume of Fluid-PLIC method for tracking geometric interfaces. It also uses a momentum-conserving transport scheme, a curvature-based Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) technique and the Continuum Surface Force (CSF) model. With these features, the solver can accurately predict interfaces. The verifiability of the solver was validated using problems involving the floating lens equilibrium contact angle and oil-water layer collisions, confirming that contact angle error converges to within 1 degree. This proves that the solver can accurately simulate interfacial behavior caused by differences in surface tension.

The introduced solver verified its ability to accurately resolve different scales in injector systems using liquids with various properties by evaluating unlike-doublet injector spray characteristics. Various spray conditions were simulated at low, medium and high velocity to quantitatively analyze the influence of grid resolution, AMR strategy and inlet velocity profile on solution accuracy. Notably, under low-velocity spray conditions, setting the minimum grid size to less than one-tenth of the sheet thickness — the primary characteristic length — was found to minimize prediction errors in sheet thickness and area. Furthermore, grid resolution at twice the Kolmogorov scale was found to adequately capture the turbulent energy cascade in medium- and high-velocity spray conditions, with errors in the Sauter mean diameter (SMD) of 5.1\% and 13.8\% respectively, thus proving the reliability of the simulation results. In this study, acceleration data from SpaceX's Falcon Heavy launch vehicle was analyzed to reflect the actual operating conditions of the flight vehicle. Numerical simulations were then performed for both like- and unlike-doublet impinging injectors based on this data. Spray characteristics were evaluated using Hewitt stability criteria, the mixing factor and the SMD, and the effects of acceleration conditions and liquid properties on spray and mixing performance were analyzed. To explore the effects of extreme acceleration conditions in particular, additional simulations of like-type injectors under +10g conditions were performed, confirming changes in injector performance in high-acceleration environments.

The results showed that differences in surface tension between the two liquid jets caused interfacial instability. This increased the atomization frequency and promoted droplet formation by creating zig-zag interfaces and branch-shaped spray patterns during the initial break-up process. Conversely, when liquid jets with the same properties collided without acceleration, interfacial instability did not occur, thereby limiting droplet formation during the initial breakup. However, even for liquids of the same phase, interfacial instability is induced when an acceleration environment is applied, promoting droplet formation. This instability then stabilizes over time, resulting in similar levels of mixing characteristics, droplet size and formation quantity across all conditions.

This study is the first to investigate the effects of acceleration and liquid properties on impinging-type injectors using a scale-resolving simulation framework. It also presents simulation criteria based on these results. Future research will focus on (1) applying high-order accuracy schemes, (2) introducing grid resolutions below the Kolmogorov scale and (3) a detailed simulation of different acceleration environments. Expanding the scope of the research in this way is expected to establish design guidelines to optimise the performance of impinging injectors in actual operating environments and provide reliable predictive data.
