Metasurfaces are two-dimensional extensions of metamaterials, which were originally engineered to exhibit electromagnetic properties not found in nature, such as negative refractive index and anisotropy. While traditional three-dimensional metamaterials are composed of subwavelength periodic structures, their physical thickness, fabrication complexity, and intrinsic losses have posed significant challenges for practical implementation. In contrast, metasurfaces are designed as ultra-thin planar structures composed of subwavelength unit cells that are periodically or quasi-periodically arranged across a surface. Each unit cell is engineered to provide a localized electromagnetic response, such that the entire surface can control the phase, amplitude, and polarization of an incident wave in a highly controllable manner. This enables metasurfaces to function as artificial boundary conditions for electromagnetic waves, manipulating their behavior at the interface through engineered discontinuities.
These properties allow metasurfaces to serve as compact and lightweight alternatives to bulky optical and RF components such as lenses, phase shifters, polarizers, and wavefront converters. Due to their structural flexibility and high degree of control over electromagnetic wavefronts, metasurfaces have seen wide-ranging applications across various frequency bands, from optics and terahertz to microwaves and RF domains. Especially in the RF regime, where larger unit cell sizes are feasible and fabrication techniques are more mature, metasurfaces present practical advantages in terms of beam shaping, frequency selectivity, and spatial wave manipulation.
Well-established applications in the RF domain include reflectarrays and transmitarrays for planar beam-steering antennas, frequency selective surfaces (FSS) for spectral filtering, radar cross-section (RCS) reduction for stealth technologies, and more recently, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) for next-generation wireless communications. Despite their varying purposes, these implementations all rely on the same underlying principle: local manipulation of the electromagnetic response of each unit cell to synthesize a desired global wavefront transformation. Modeling approaches commonly use equivalent surface impedance or circuit analogs to describe the unit cell response, enabling both intuitive understanding and computational efficiency in full-system design.
This research focuses on one of the most promising emerging applications of metasurfaces in wireless communications reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS). RIS are artificial electromagnetic surfaces capable of dynamically altering the propagation path of incident signals by adjusting the phase or amplitude response at each unit cell. In urban environments, direct line-of-sight (LOS) communication between a base station and a user device is often blocked by physical obstacles such as buildings, trees, or vehicles, resulting in severe signal degradation or complete loss of service. Traditional solutions have involved deploying repeaters or additional base stations to circumvent such non-line-of-sight (NLOS) issues. However, these approaches suffer from high deployment costs, energy consumption, and limited adaptability to dynamic environments.
RIS offer a cost-effective and energy-efficient alternative by providing passive or semi-passive reflection of signals towards the intended receiver, even in the absence of a direct transmission path. By accurately controlling the reflection phase across its surface, RIS can steer the signal in the desired direction, effectively creating an intelligent relay point. Multiple RIS panels can even be cascaded in a multi-hop configuration to extend coverage further into obstructed areas. To operate effectively within a wireless communication infrastructure, RIS must meet certain performance criteria, such as bandwidth compatibility with the transmitted signal, high radiation efficiency, and support for polarization diversity. In particular, base station antennas often employ ±45° slanted or circular polarization, requiring the RIS to independently control orthogonal polarization components for optimal performance.
In this thesis, we explore the development and optimization of liquid crystal (LC)-based RIS for microwave and millimeter-wave applications. Liquid crystals, though widely used in optical displays, have not been extensively adopted in RF domains due to their relatively slow response times and limited understanding of their high-frequency dielectric behavior. To address this, we first develop a physical model that accurately captures the frequency-dependent dielectric properties of liquid crystal materials in RF bands. We then modify the conventional LC fabrication process—which is typically based on glass substrates and thus costly and time-consuming—by adapting it to low-cost, PCB-compatible fabrication techniques. This adaptation not only reduces manufacturing complexity and cost but also facilitates integration into large-area RF systems.
To validate the effectiveness of LC-based RIS in real-world scenarios, we propose and fabricate multiple device structures. These include dual-polarized LC-RIS designs capable of independent control over both vertical and horizontal polarizations, high-efficiency LC metasurfaces with reduced reflection loss, and large-area implementations optimized for 5G millimeter-wave frequencies. Furthermore, we propose simplified biasing architectures that minimize wiring complexity and enable passive beamforming states that require no continuous external power, thereby enhancing system robustness and reducing overall power consumption.
A key challenge with LC materials is their relatively slow electro-optic response due to intrinsic viscosity. To address this, we introduce a polymer network liquid crystal (PNLC) architecture formed by doping reactive monomers into the LC host and subsequently UV-curing the composite. This structure offers significantly enhanced switching speeds—up to 50 times faster than traditional nematic LC configurations. Additionally, we implement an in-plane switching (IPS) electrode configuration, which enables faster and more uniform control of the in-plane electric field, thereby further improving dynamic beamforming capability for real-time wireless applications.
Beyond LC-based designs, we also develop a PIN diode-based RIS architecture tailored for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) scenarios, which are emerging as key components of future 6G systems. PIN diodes are efficient semiconductor switches that can toggle between high and low impedance states under low voltage operation. In our implementation, each RIS unit cell integrates four PIN diodes—two per polarization axis—allowing for independent control of orthogonal polarizations with a 2-bit phase resolution. This discrete phase shifting capability facilitates precise beam steering while maintaining compact device size and low power consumption.
We apply this RIS to an ISAC framework in which a monostatic base station transmits dual-polarized signals, each encoded with distinct communication and sensing functionalities. The RIS reflects each component separately—delivering communication signals to users while directing sensing signals toward designated targets. This polarization-diverse RIS approach enables seamless coexistence of wireless data transmission and environmental monitoring, thereby enhancing the spectral and spatial efficiency of the overall system. Our experimental validation confirms that RIS-assisted ISAC systems can outperform traditional architectures in both flexibility and performance, providing a pathway toward more intelligent, multifunctional wireless infrastructures.
Through the integration of LC and PIN-diode-based unit cells, advanced modeling techniques, and low-cost fabrication processes, this thesis presents a comprehensive investigation into the design, implementation, and characterization of RIS for practical RF applications. The proposed systems demonstrate the feasibility and potential of metasurface-based RIS technologies in real-world wireless communication and sensing environments, contributing to the broader adoption of metasurfaces in next-generation network infrastructures.
