Relativistic jets from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), particularly in the case of blazars where the jet is viewed at a small angle to our observable line of sight, are powerful probes of high-energy astrophysical phenomena. The study of their kinematic evolution and structural variability offers deep insights into jet formation, collimation, and particle acceleration mechanisms. However, direct imaging with Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) is often limited in cadence, making it challenging to track the rapid changes characteristic of these objects. This thesis presents a comprehensive approach to investigate blazar jet dynamics by leveraging high-cadence, multi-frequency radio polarimetric monitoring data, complementing traditional high-resolution imaging.

A primary focus of this work is to address the intrinsic n-pi ambiguity in Electric Vector Position Angle (EVPA) measurements, a fundamental challenge in polarimetry that can obscure the true nature of magnetic field evolution. We developed a robust methodology, implemented as a Python package, that utilizes a “smallest angle approximation” with multiple data binning widths to explore potential EVPA configurations. Our analysis demonstrates that even with high-cadence data, resolving this ambiguity is non-trivial, and different valid configurations can lead to significantly different physical interpretations, underscoring the need for a flexible approach to modeling.

This methodology is applied to an extensive case study of the notable blazar OJ 287, a candidate for hosting a supermassive binary black hole system. Using data from the KVN (PAGaN), ALMA (AMAPOLA), and Metsähovi Radio Observatory from MJD 56024 to 59975, we analyzed its flux, polarization, and EVPA behavior. A key finding is a remarkable, large-scale EVPA swing of approximately 384 degrees that occurred between late 2015 and early 2017. This period of rotation was concurrent with a series of repeating radio flares that exhibited systematically varying amplitudes.

We interpret this correlated behavior as strong evidence for a globally curved jet morphology. As an emitting component propagates along this bent trajectory, the jet’s viewing angle relative to the observer changes, causing significant variations in the relativistic Doppler boosting factor (delta). To quantify this, we decomposed the light curve into seven prominent flares and calculated the variability Doppler factor (delta_var) for each, finding values ranging from approximately 5.17 to 10.83. This variation in delta_var provides compelling quantitative support for the geometric model. We further contend that this major EVPA swing was a non-periodic event, likely triggered by the ejection of a single, dominant energetic component interacting with the jet’s helical magnetic field and a downstream re-collimation shock. However, we also present and discuss alternative EVPA configurations permitted by the n-pi ambiguity, which would necessitate different or additional physical mechanisms (e.g., internal shocks), highlighting the current limitations and interpretational challenges in the field.

In conclusion, this thesis demonstrates the power of high-cadence polarimetric monitoring as an essential tool for probing the complex dynamics of blazar jets. While our findings for OJ 287 strongly support a model driven by jet geometry and relativistic beaming, we emphasize that such conclusions are contingent on the resolution of the EVPA ambiguity. This work not only provides a detailed analysis of a significant event in a key blazar but also offers a critical perspective on the methodological challenges that must be addressed for future progress in understanding the universe’s most powerful particle accelerators.

The unresolved questions arising from the EVPA ambiguity and the singular nature of the event in OJ 287 underscore a critical need for even more intensive and sustained monitoring programs. Such efforts are essential to determine if large-scale EVPA swings are common or rare phenomena and to build a statistical sample that can robustly test jet models. This thesis, therefore, lays the scientific groundwork for a future intense monitoring program with the newly developed 40-meter Thai National Radio Telescope (TNRT). A long-term blazar monitoring campaign with TNRT will not only extend the research presented here but will also be invaluable for the telescope’s operational development, providing a framework for its polarimetric commissioning and establishing its role in time-domain astrophysics.
