High-pressure techniques are crucial for exploring and manipulating quantum phases and transitions in condensed matter physics, as they enable the controlled alteration of lattice structures and electronic interactions without introducing chemical disorder. This dissertation presents a comprehensive investigation of the pressure-induced changes in the magnetic and electronic ground states of layered materials Co1/3TaS2 and CsV3Sb5, utilizing transport, elastoresistance, synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), and muon spin rotation (μSR) techniques.
In Co1/3TaS2, pressure systematically suppresses the non-coplanar triple-Q magnetic ordering responsible for the topological Hall effect, fully eliminating it above 0.88 GPa. Meanwhile, the stripe-type single-Q antiferromagnetic order, which breaks rotational symmetry, remains stable up to approximately 1.38 GPa. Beyond this point, a new magnetic phase emerges between 1.61 and ~3.5 GPa, characterized by a resistivity upturn, sign change of magnetoresistance, and distinct anomalies in the Hall coefficient. μSR measurements confirm the persistence of magnetic order throughout the investigated pressure range, highlighting the magnetic origin of the observed transport anomalies. Elastoresistance measurements clearly indicate a sharp increase in nematic susceptibility at the stripe-type single-Q transition, providing direct evidence of rotational symmetry breaking.
For CsV3Sb5, elastoresistance measurements under pressure reveal significant evolution of electronic nematic susceptibility associated with charge-density-wave (CDW) states. Nematic susceptibility shows a prominent step at the CDW transition and a Curie–Weiss-like divergence approaching the nematic transition temperature. Pressure progressively suppresses the anisotropic character and rotational symmetry-breaking nature of the CDW state and the associated nematic fluctuations, although the intrinsic nematic transition temperature remains nearly unchanged. These findings provide experimental evidence supporting an isotropic nature of the pressure-induced CDW state, contrasting with prior NMR results that suggested anisotropic, stripe-like ordering.
Furthermore, this dissertation introduces a powerful and versatile elastoresistance tool specifically designed to detect rotational symmetry breaking under high-pressure conditions, significantly enhancing the capability to characterize quantum phases.
Collectively, these findings advance our understanding of the interplay between magnetism, electronic instabilities, and structural symmetries in layered correlated materials, providing key insights into pressure-tuned quantum phenomena.
