Tubular structure systems are capable of maximizing the advantages of high strength steels, leading to their augmented application in modern engineering. However, the use of high strength steels in tubular structures presents significant challenges, particularly the increased susceptibility to fracture in welded joints due to reduced ductility. While material damage models can simulate crack initiation and propagation in numerical analysis, their implementation is hindered by complexity and the necessity for case-specific parameter calibration process through experimental data. As a practical alternative, the concept of a strain limit criterion offers a simplified approach to controlling fracture in high strength steel tubular joints. According to this approach, when the monitored strain obtained from numerical analysis exceeds a specified limit, the load-deformation relationship is deemed reliable only before the exceedance, and the ultimate joint strength is determined as the load corresponding to the strain limit. The latest draft of ISO 14346 advocates the use of a 5% strain limit for tubular joints, regardless of joint configuration or loading type. However, the methodology for strain evaluation and the need for tailored strain limits to account for varying ductility and failure characteristics remain unaddressed.
This study extends the strain limit investigation to a wide range of tubular joint configurations, proposing systematic strain evaluation procedures and tailored strain limits to enhance design accuracy and structural safety. The research combines experimental programs with numerical investigations across three key tubular joint configurations: circular hollow section (CHS) K joints, longitudinal gusset plate to tubular X (XP2) joints, and transverse gusset plate to tubular X (XP1) joints. Both CHS and rectangular hollow section (RHS) chord members were considered for XP2 and XP1 joints. High strength steel with nominal yield stresses of up to 700 MPa was adopted for experimental validation. The experimental program investigated load-deformation relationships, fracture behavior, and strain distributions for each joint configuration.
Test-validated numerical analyses further explored the feasibility of strain limit criteria. Optimized finite element models, incorporating extremely fine elements exclusively in the critical regions where fractures occurred during testing, effectively replicated the experimental load-deformation behavior. The Gurson–Tvergaard–Needleman (GTN) material damage model was applied to simulate fracture in CHS K gap joints with maximum gaps, yielding reliable results but requiring case-specific calibration, making it less practical. General finite element models without material damage demonstrated acceptable strain measurement accuracy without requiring calibration, supporting their use for practical applications. Strain convergence was achieved with a mesh interval of t/16 or smaller, and a stand-off distance of 0.5t from the weld toe was validated for all configurations (t denotes the thickness of the member). For CHS K joints and XP1 joints, limiting strain of 2.5% and 5%, respectively, were found to conservatively predict fractures. For XP2 joints, a 2.5% limiting strain not only provided a conservative prediction of fracture but also facilitated a more economical design compared to the conventional deformation-based criterion.
Existing deformation-based ultimate joint strength evaluation criteria often fail to adequately assess the strength of high strength steel tubular joints prone to early fracture. This study establishes strain limit criteria as a robust and simplified tool for predicting fracture behavior and evaluating ultimate joint strength in high strength steel tubular joints. The findings contribute to advancing structural engineering practices and design standards, paving the way for the broader application of high strength steels in tubular structures.
