With growing urban population and expanding urban areas, the importance of understanding urban precipitation keeps increasing. The impacts of urban areas on the lower atmosphere have been suggested to be one of the influential factors in urban precipitation. In this study, detection of urban effects on precipitation in the Seoul metropolitan area (SMA), South Korea is attempted by analyzing hourly rain gauge data during 2005–2020. Precipitation events are categorized according to 850-hPa wind type, and the precipitation increase from the upwind to downwind regions is examined. The downwind precipitation increase is largest in summer (39%), especially in August (64%). The August precipitation is analyzed in detail. Precipitation statistically significantly increases in Seoul for weak winds and 25–50 km downwind of the center of Seoul for westerly winds, and the precipitation increases are largest in the afternoon. For the precipitation increases, the increases in frequency and intensity of precipitation events are responsible. Short-duration and heavy precipitation events associated with small-sized precipitation systems initiated within the SMA are mainly responsible for the precipitation increases. The downwind precipitation increase also occurs for southwesterly, southerly, and southeasterly winds but is associated with large-sized precipitation systems.
The urban breeze is induced by the urban heat island (UHI), and its interactions with other atmospheric phenomena are of great interest. In this study, impacts of background wind on the interactions between urban breeze circulation (UBC) and convective cells are investigated. For this, idealized ensemble simulations are performed using the Weather Research and Forecasting-large-eddy simulation (WRF-LES) model, where the initial background wind speed varies from 0 to 5 m s–1 in 0.5 m s–1 intervals. As the background wind speed increases, the location of the strongest updraft moves from the urban center to the downwind urban boundary. This is associated with different interactions between the UBC and convective cells under different background wind speeds. For no background wind, the relatively strong UBC is located at the urban center, producing a strong updraft there. Convective cells are advected toward the UBC center and merge with the strong updraft, further intensifying it. For weak background wind, the relatively weak UBC is located near the downwind urban boundary. Convective cells passing the urban area merge with each other and intensify, and after they pass the downwind urban boundary, the strong vertical wind shear in the right part of the UBC tilts and weakens them. For strong background wind, the UBC is very weak and convective cells are advected mainly by the strong background wind. These changes in convective activities with background wind speed may lead to the changes in the preferred location of cloud development.
Urban-enhanced precipitation is often observed far downwind of cities, suggesting important roles of background wind. The impacts of background wind on the initiation and evolution of urban-induced precipitation are examined through idealized ensemble simulations with different initial background wind speeds of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 m s−1 using the WRF-LES model. Without background wind, a strong UBC initiates a relatively large number of cumulus clouds in the urban area, which exhibit greater cloud top heights than those in the rural area. The early-initiated clouds do not precipitate but moisten the middle troposphere, assisting later-initiated clouds to develop into deep convective clouds and produce concentrated precipitation in the urban area. As the background wind speed increases, the UBC weakens. Also, the high-humidity area generated by early-initiated clouds is continuously advected away from the urban area. Consequently, the precipitation initiation is delayed as the background wind speed increases. Precipitating clouds are advected downwind and generate a cold pool, and updrafts are repeatedly produced at the downwind boundary of the cold pool. The downwind-advected clouds are fed by the newly produced updrafts, being a long-lived organized precipitation system that produces a considerable amount of precipitation in the downwind area. This feeding effect is most prominent for a moderate background wind (3 m s−1), causing the precipitation amount and duration to be maximized. For stronger background winds, precipitation is initiated by the mechanical lifting of the warm urban air over the cool rural air around sunset.
The microphysical characteristics of snowfall in Seoul and their changes with meteorological conditions are examined using about 6-year observation data from a Parsivel disdrometer. The snow particle size distribution (PSD) exhibits convex-down shapes, being better represented by gamma distributions than exponential distributions. The changes in gamma PSD parameters with snowfall rate differ between the mean PSD and 1-min PSDs. The volume-weighted mean diameter Dm much more rapidly increases with snowfall rate in comparison with Dm in Beijing, China and Pyeongchang, South Korea, suggesting the relative importance of aggregation in Seoul. 77% of snowfall in Seoul occurs when northwesterly blows at the 850-hPa level. This snowfall is associated with west-high/east-low pressure patterns, large air–sea temperature differences (~19°C), and shallow (≤ 2.5 km) precipitation systems, suggesting a large contribution of sea-effect snowfall from the Yellow Sea. The northwesterly-type snowfall with lower temperatures (≤ 25th percentile, COLD) and with higher temperatures (≥ 75th percentile, WARM) at the 850-hPa level is compared in the same intensity range of 0.5–1 mm h−1. Compared with the WARM snowfall, the COLD snowfall has relatively broad PSDs and less-rimed snow particles. The COLD snowfall is associated with relatively large wind shear, small static stability, low temperatures of −21 to −9°C, and low humidity in the lower atmosphere, which is attributed to relatively strong northwesterly resulting in relatively strong cold and dry advection. This implies that enhanced aggregation by stronger turbulence and dendritic growths can contribute to the broader PSDs and that weakened riming for the lower temperatures might be associated with the less-rimed snow particles.
Storms can develop from interactions between various local forcings in and around cities. In this study, urban impacts on a development of scattered convective storms and their interactions with topographic impacts in the SMA are investigated. For this, ensemble simulations with land use map and topography of the SMA and additional sets of ensemble simulations in which the urban area, urban heating, urban drag, or topography in the SMA is removed are conducted using the WRF model. The precipitation amount in Seoul substantially increases by urban impacts. This precipitation increase is mainly attributed to the UHI which helps convective cells develop into strong storms by increasing temperature gradient at the front of cold outflows and enhancing updrafts there. Although weak urban breeze is induced by the UHI, it does not play crucial roles in precipitation for this event. Meanwhile, the urban drag causes marginal changes in precipitation amount but delays precipitation evolution by about 1 hour. The urban–topographic interaction impacts contribute to the development of strong storms in Seoul and increase precipitation in Seoul. This is attributed to the circulation induced by convection over the eastern mountains which suppresses precipitation development near the western coast by sea breeze in the morning and preserves the warm air. The preserved warm air later moves into Seoul along with the sea breeze and invigorates storm development in Seoul in the late afternoon.
Compared with urban impacts on less-organized precipitation systems, urban modification of highly-organized or strongly-forced precipitation systems remains less understood. In this study, urban impacts on a cold-frontal precipitation system passing over the SMA are examined. For this, three sets of urban ensemble simulations with diurnal-mean anthropogenic heat intensities and urban momentum roughness lengths of (0 W m−2, 1 m), (45 W m−2, 2 m), and (90 W m−2, 3 m) and a set of nonurban ensemble simulations are performed using the WRF model. Comparisons with observations show that the characteristics and passage of the cold front are acceptably reproduced in all sets of the ensemble simulations. Precipitation is enhanced by about 20–40% downstorm of Seoul in the urban ensemble simulations, with marginal delays in the movement of the precipitation system. The precipitation enhancement is hard to be discerned by a comparison between a single pair of urban and nonurban simulations, since the urban-induced precipitation enhancement is obscured by strong precipitation anomalies arising from different locations of precipitation cores in individual simulations. The downstorm precipitation enhancement is attributed to precipitation intensity increases in narrow cold-frontal rainband, which results from intensified frontal updrafts due to the increases in cross-frontal vorticity. The warm urban-heated air trailing the cold front after the frontal passage results in the increases in cross-frontal vorticity by decreasing temperature gradient at the frontal zone.
