The urgent threat of global warming has accelerated international climate efforts, including the Paris Agreement and corporate initiatives like RE100. Hydrogen has gained significant attention as a key enabler of the energy transition, offering high gravimetric energy density and the potential for carbon-free production. However, over 95% of hydrogen is still produced through fossil fuel-based processes, underscoring the need for clean, scalable alternatives. Green hydrogen, generated via water electrolysis powered by renewable energy, offers a promising solution and positions electrolyzer technologies at the forefront of decarbonization strategies.
Among emerging electrolyzer technologies, anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWEs) offer advantages such as alkaline operation and the use of non-precious metal catalysts, enhancing prospects for cost reduction. Nevertheless, challenges remain, including sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics at the anode and insufficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity at the cathode. This thesis addresses these issues by developing noble-metal-free unified electrodes through direct electrodeposition of OER and HER catalysts onto porous transport layers (PTLs).
In Chapter 2, the fabrication of a three-dimensional unified anode is explored. A nickel-iron-based catalyst was directly electrodeposited onto stainless steel felt to enhance OER activity and structural integration. This approach demonstrated improved current density and durability compared to conventional electrodes, highlighting the benefits of a unified electrode design for AEMWE applications.
Chapter 3 investigates the optimization of phase composition and morphology in NiFe-based anodes to further enhance catalytic performance. By tuning electrodeposition and post-treatment conditions, the study identifies critical structure–activity relationships. The optimized anode was applied to an AEMWE stack and exhibited stable, high performance under practical operating conditions.
Chapter 4 focuses on developing a bamboo-like NiFeP cathode for HER applications in AEMWEs. A scalable electrodeposition and phosphidation process was used to integrate the catalyst onto stainless steel felt. The resulting cathode achieved high current densities without the use of noble metals and exhibited both excellent performance and stable operation in AEMWE stack-level cells, thereby validating the potential of a high-performance and low-cost AEMWE system.
Collectively, this work demonstrates a comprehensive strategy for developing high-performance, noble-metal-free electrodes tailored for AEMWE systems. By addressing both anode and cathode challenges, the study provides valuable insights for advancing cost-effective green hydrogen production technologies toward large-scale commercialization.
